But throughout millennia, some dared defy traditions with their intellect and ambition. In this series, we profile some of the most powerful and enigmatic female figures in Chinese history.<\/em><\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The story of Consort Wan Zhen\u2019er is what modern-day Chinese costume dramas are made of: a forbidden romance, imperial court intrigues and true love.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Consort Wan, or Wan Guifei, entered the palace as a <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">child servant<\/span>, assigned to attend to the young Crown Prince Zhu Jianshen, who later became Emperor Chenghua of <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">the Ming dynasty (1368-1644)<\/span>. She was 17 years his senior.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Ming imperial harem was strictly hierarchical, and women of the inner palace were selected from commoner families to ensure no outside power threatened the throne. Their status was determined by birth, age and their ability to bear sons. A woman who was older, low-born and childless would normally have no path to influence, much less become an emperor\u2019s most beloved consort.<\/p>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">A lifeline in the dark<\/h3>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Zhu Jianshen was just two when his father, Emperor Yingzong, was captured by Mongol forces during battle in 1449. His uncle seized the throne as Emperor Jingtai, and the young prince was soon stripped of his status and isolated within the cavernous <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Forbidden City<\/span>.
