A resident is unhappy with what he described as a \u201cfull-scale encampment\u201d at a cluttered void deck in Yishun.<\/p>\n
Stomper M<\/strong> shared photos of the situation at Block 718 Yishun Street 71<\/a>, which he said has \u201creached a point of significant concern\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat began as a few items has evolved into a full-scale encampment that obstructs public space, creates potential fire hazards and compromises the cleanliness of the estate,\u201d he told Stomp.<\/p>\n According to M, the void deck appeared to be \u201cdominated\u201d by the following items:<\/p>\n The Stomper complained: \u201cWe pay our service and conservancy charges, but we can\u2019t even use our own void deck because it\u2019s being used as a private kitchen and storeroom.\u201d<\/p>\n PHOTOS: STOMP<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n M also expressed concern about the accumulation of flammable materials such as styrofoam, plastic crates, cardboard and electrical appliances in a confined space.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the event of an emergency, these obstructions could hinder the evacuation of residents or the access of emergency responders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He added that the cluttered setup would be especially challenging for elderly residents and those using mobility aids due to the presence of \u201cbulky equipment\u201d.<\/p>\n The Stomper also pointed to improper disposal of food waste, which he said \u201ccreates a breeding ground for cockroaches and rodents\u201d.<\/p>\n PHOTO: STOMP<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n M said the void deck is meant to be a shared space but has remained \u201cin a state of persistent disarray\u201d despite feedback to the town council.<\/p>\n \u201cThe primary frustration stems from the fact that these items are not temporary\u201d he added. \u201cThe presence of a refrigerator plugged into public power points and heavy furniture suggests a permanent setup.\u201d<\/p>\n The Stomper called for \u201cimmediate and decisive action\u201d, including:<\/p>\n \u201cPublic spaces<\/a> are the backbone of HDB living. When one individual or group privatises these areas for personal gain or convenience, it erodes the quality of life for the entire block,\u201d M said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is time for the authorities to step in and reclaim Block\u00a0718\u00a0for its residents.\u201d<\/p>\n PHOTO: STOMP<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n Nee Soon Town Council said it is aware of the Stomper\u2019s concerns and the items have since been cleared.<\/p>\n A spokesperson told Stomp on May 21: \u201cThese spaces provide community engagement and social interaction and we will accommodate these as far as possible.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the same time, we also remind users to be considerate and refrain from placing too many items at the void deck, to avoid causing any inconvenience or safety risk.\u201d<\/p>\n The town council added that it seeks residents\u2019 understanding in ensuring common spaces remain clean and pleasant for everyone.<\/p>\n Have something to say?
