Insta360 <\/b>might be a company known for its action cameras, but they make microphones, too. And their newest product, the Insta360 Mic Pro<\/b>, a wireless microphone for on-the-move recording, competing with the likes of the Rode Wireless Go and the DJI Mic.<\/p>\n
That competition is obvious on the visual front, as one of the defining features of the Mic Pro is the 6-colour e-ink display <\/b>on the transmitter module. If you\u2019re curious how a display on your microphone enhances recording quality, well, it doesn\u2019t. Instead, the display is meant to showcase logos, production identifiers, or art for whatever production group you\u2019re recording for.<\/p>\n

Specifically, each transmitter module is equipped with three microphones, allowing it to have multiple polar patterns<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n To be technical, the three microphones default to an omnidirectional pickup pattern, but the Mic Pro is able to emulate the sound of a specific pickup pattern depending on what mode you choose.\u00a0You can select between omnidirectional, cardioid or figure-8. Once one of these modes is selected, the Mic Pro will combine and process audio coming from all three microphones to match the sound you\u2019d expect from the polar pattern mode you chose.<\/p>\n Insta360 states that, as it can emulate a cardioid pickup pattern, the Mic Pro can also be mounted on a camera and used as a shotgun mic.<\/p>\n Image: Insta360.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The frequency range that the Mic Pro can pick up spans 20Hz to 20kHz, though you can cut frequencies up to 100Hz with Low Cut on. It also supports 32-bit float recording<\/b> for (theoretically) higher dynamic range and clipping prevention, though this only applies to internal recordings to the transmitter \u2013 if you\u2019re transmitting audio to a receiver connected to a camera or external recorder, you\u2019re stuck on 24-bit.<\/p>\n Speaking of which, the Mic Pro\u2019s transmitter has 32GB <\/b>of onboard storage for internal recordings, alongside an NPU for AI noise cancellation and a Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO)<\/b> meant for timecode sync.<\/p>\n The Mic Pro receiver supports recording from four transmitters, with each transmitter recording in separate tracks.<\/p>\n Image: Insta360.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n A word on the receiver: it also supports multi-channel recording from multiple transmitters. 4-to-1 Mode allows four transmitters to send audio to a single receiver, with the receiver recording each transmitter on a separate track, while 2-to-4 Mode routes audio from two transmitters to four receivers, allowing multiple cameras to share the same audio.<\/p>\n Finally, Insta360 says each transmitter can offer up to 10 hours <\/b>of standalone battery life, and up to 30 hours with the charging case<\/b>. The case can also fast charge. Just five minutes is sufficient to for an additional hour of recording time.
