BYD is expanding its lineup of plug-in hybrids in Singapore with the new Seal 6 DM-i<\/b>. It\u2019s available in sedan and estate body styles, with prices starting from S$191,888.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with the sedan. This is available in two variants: Dynamic and Premium<\/b>. If you have deep enough pockets, it\u2019s worth ponying up for the Premium version because it gets more power, a larger battery, faster charging, and features like electric folding mirrors, sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, front ventilated seats, an 8-speaker sound system, and more. The estate version is called the Touring and is only available in Premium trim.<\/p>\n

In terms of power, the Premium version offers 219hp and 260nm of torque,<\/b> while the Dynamic version serves up 174hp and 210nm of torque<\/b>. Both versions are front-wheel-drive only and are powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated motor that\u2019s paired with an electric motor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Premium variant comes with a larger 19kWh battery<\/b>, and its claimed WLTP electric-only range is 105km. This is more than enough to get from one end of our island to the other. The Dynamic variants feature smaller 10.08kWh batteries<\/b>. The claimed WLTP electric-only range of the Dynamic variant of the sedan is 55km, and 50km for the estate.<\/p>\n

Along with the engine, BYD says all versions of the Seal 6 DM-i can get up to 1,300km of range on a full tank<\/b> of petrol and a full battery charge. Even with a leaden right foot, you should be able to get to Genting Highlands and back without stopping to refuel or recharge. Speaking of charging, the Premium variant supports up to 27kW DC charging and 6.6kW AC charging. The Dynamic variants can only do up to 3.3kW AC charging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The interiors of all variants are largely similar. You get an 8.8-inch instrument cluster and a larger 12.8-inch touch-enabled infotainment display. All variants will also support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.<\/p>\n

As much as the government wants to push motorists toward electric vehicles, there\u2019s no denying that they might not be for everyone, at least not for folks who make frequent trips up north \u2013 particularly to KL and beyond. For now, a petrol or hybrid vehicle still makes more sense for these people.<\/p>\n
