it would cut about 130 roles<\/a> as it shifts production to other regional markets such as Malaysia and Vietnam.<\/p>\nThe Tuas facility is expected to be redeveloped over time to focus on logistics and innovation functions.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Gardenia said that the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) was informed in advance.<\/p>\n
“This enabled the union to quickly mobilise support such as training, job placement assistance, and discussions on fair retrenchment terms. FDAWU was also able to quickly tap on its network of unionised partners to identify suitable vacancies for affected workers,” it added.<\/p>\n
“The union worked closely with Gardenia to ensure fair compensation and transition support for affected employees.”<\/p>\n
The company will also sponsor one year of union membership for existing members so that they can continue to access career and financial support, said Gardenia.<\/p>\n
In the coming weeks, FDAWU will organise on-site jobs and skills training for affected workers, including assistance with resume writing and interview preparation, the company noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When CNA visited Gardenia\u2019s headquarters at 224 Pandan Loop on Wednesday, staff members were filing in for a meeting at 2pm.<\/p>\n
One member of staff, who works in the warehouse and wanted to remain anonymous, said he was not surprised by the job cuts.<\/p>\n
He told CNA he had previously suspected that production was going to be moved out of Singapore as the ingredients being ordered had reduced in quantity since January.<\/p>\n
When asked if he was worried for his position, he said he has been in the company for 20 years and was \u201cnot scared\u201d to get retrenched.<\/p>\n
\u201c(I am) old already \u2026 why would I mind?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Another staff member said he had friends on the production line and was sad at their departures.<\/p>\n
Gardenia was established as a small bakery in Bukit Timah Plaza in 1978.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It has since expanded its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region, with operations in countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia.<\/p>\n
