The pipe organ, with its thousands of whistles and massive wooden lungs, is the quintessential voice of Western sacred music. Yet for Hong Kong organist Eric Chan\u2019s latest cross-cultural project, he shares the stage with the piercing cries of the suona<\/em> \u2013 a traditional Chinese woodwind whose melodies have echoed through rural villages for centuries.<\/p>\n Played in this project by Guo Yazhi and Chrysoberyl Chan \u2013 Eric Chan\u2019s partner in life and music \u2013 the suona<\/em> bridges a vast cultural divide, showing that the regal tones of the organ and the fluid vocals of the suona<\/em> are made for one another.<\/p>\n Fresh off performances in Australia and New Zealand in early May \u2013 as part of a wider organ-meets-suona \u201cPipe Organ Through East and West\u201d programme \u2013 Eric Chan has returned to his hometown for a brief respite before leaving for an organ festival in the Czech Republic in August.<\/p>\n While he has achieved international acclaim \u2013 he has performed at St Paul\u2019s Cathedral and the Royal Albert Hall, both in London \u2013 the lack of a Hong Kong debut has been a missing chapter in his career.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m from Hong Kong, so this is the most meaningful performance that I can have,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nNow, 14 years after first learning the organ, he will make his local debut on September 11 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as part of a Mid-Autumn Festival<\/span> celebration.<\/div>\n
