Sony has officially announced the new Sony Alpha 7R VI<\/b>, and this time, the company is aiming to close the gap between ultra-high-resolution photography and flagship-level speed.<\/p>\n
As the successor to the A7R V<\/b> from 2022, the A7R VI comes with a new 66.8-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS <\/b>sensor that is paired with Sony\u2019s latest BIONZ XR2 image processor<\/b>. That combination allows the A7R VI to shoot blackout-free bursts at up to 30fps, which is a significant jump from the 10fps limit on the previous model.<\/p>\n
On paper at least, it almost feels like Sony is borrowing ideas from its faster Alpha 1 and Alpha 9 series cameras instead of keeping the 7R lineup strictly for slower-paced landscape or studio work. The A7R VI also gains Sony\u2019s updated AI-powered Real-time Recognition AF+ system for improved autofocus tracking across humans, animals, birds and vehicles.<\/p>\n
Video capabilities have also been improved. The A7R VI camera supports uncropped 8K video at 30fps<\/b> alongside 4K recording at up to 120fps<\/b>. Sony says the new stacked sensor offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range while also improving readout speeds and reducing rolling shutter distortion.<\/p>\n
Sony has made a number of physical changes too. The A7R VI gets a redesigned grip, illuminated buttons for low-light shooting, a brighter 9.44-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder<\/b>, and dual USB-C ports. One of the bigger changes, however, is the move to a new NP-SA100 battery<\/b>, which replaces Sony\u2019s long-running NP-FZ100 battery used across much of its Alpha lineup. For existing Sony Alpha users upgrading from older cameras, this means you will need to buy new spare batteries and chargers separately.<\/p>\n Photo: Sony<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The camera is priced at S$5,999<\/b> for the body alone. That makes it S$200 more expensive than the Alpha 7R V at launch. But it\u2019s worth noting that Sony seems to want to break the Alpha 7R series away from the \u201chigh resolution but slower\u201d stigma. With stacked sensor performance, 30fps burst shooting and 8K video now onboard, the A7R VI feels much closer to being an all-round flagship camera rather than a niche body aimed mainly at landscape or studio photographers.
