In an earnings release, parent company Sega Sammy announced bluntly that it “decided to cancel Super Game” after it reviewed the company’s strategy on free-to-play games as a service.

Sega says that some free-to-play game development personnel — more than 100 people — have already been transferred to other “full-game” development teams that are focused on mainstay IPs. In other words, Sega is backing down from its Super Game plans to stick with its tried-and-true game franchises. That includes still-in-development games like the new Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage games announced in 2023 at The Game Awards.

In an earnings release, Sega also reaffirmed that it’s working on a new Virtua Fighter game and the follow-up to Alien: Isolation.

<picture>
        </picture>Image: Sega

Sega announced its Super Game initiative in 2021. At the time, Sega offered little detail on the project, other than that it was a new intellectual property and that it would target a global audience. The company planned to release the Super Game during Sega’s 2026 fiscal year. The Super Game was different from another game teased at the time, Creative Assembly’s canceled shooter Hyenas, but the mystery project sounded like it was following a similar goal, targeting a global release for a new IP.

In 2022, Sega described its Super Game initiative as a strategy to develop “new and innovative titles” with a focus on global reach, online interactivity, community building, and IP utilization. “Big-budget” reboots of its Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio franchises were part of that initiative, but they’ll eventually see the light of day.

Sega’s cancellation of the Super Game project is part of a larger trend of major publishers investing in and ultimately backing away from games-as-a-service (GaaS) titles. Over the past decade, numerous developers and publishers, flush with cash, chased the success of games like Fortnite, Destiny 2, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto Online, only to find themselves fighting for scraps as new titles struggled to break through entrenched hits.

Fortunately for Sega, the company has many proven properties to fall back on. That’s good news for both Sega and for fans of the game maker’s classic IP.

                    Related

   The new Crazy Taxi is going to be a ‘large-scale, open-world online game’ because of course it is

Honestly?
