{"id":51911,"date":"2026-05-13T03:44:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T19:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51911"},"modified":"2026-05-13T03:44:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T19:44:37","slug":"sex-desire-and-intimacy-explored-in-singapore-art-exhibition-for-over-18s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51911","title":{"rendered":"Sex, desire and intimacy explored in Singapore art exhibition for over-18s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Singapore\u2019s reputation might be that of a conservative society that is rather prudish when it comes to physical intimacy and eroticism, but National Gallery Singapore (NGS) is opening a window into its boudoir with an exhibition that focuses on the artistic expressions of sexual pleasures.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cPassion is Volcanic: Desire in Southeast Asian Art\u201d borrows its title from Liu Kang\u2019s 1953 essay <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Trip to Bali<\/em>, in which the Chinese-Singaporean artist wrote that the passions of the Balinese were primal and unstoppable, like a volcanic eruption.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Adele Tan, senior curator at NGS and a co-curator of the exhibition, tells the South China Morning Post: \u201cI wanted to use the lens of eroticism and desire to look at the museum\u2019s collection and see if there were other narratives that may not have been spoken about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Showcasing more than 70 works across some 800 years, the exhibition is structured into three fluid chapters that guide visitors through the evolution of desire: \u201cAsian Mythos and Rituals\u201d, \u201cConventions of the Erotic\u201d and \u201cPublic Arenas\/Private Interiors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Vajradhara and Prajnaparamita<\/em>, a gilt-copper sculpture from the 14th or 15th century displayed in the first section, depicts two Buddhist deities in a seated, face-to-face, sexual embrace \u2013 a Tantric posture designed to synchronise breath and energy for spiritual connection.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-inline-container e1a5rv550 css-1llrc1m e1yqhwb40\" data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<div class=\"image-inline caption e1fvabeq0 css-19sk4h4 ea9pn0s0\" data-qa=\"Component-Container\">\n<figure class=\"image-inline caption ea9pn0s1 css-1qeofuq e1gf69pb0\" data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-handleRenderImage-ImageContainer\" class=\"css-bjn8wh e1gf69pb3\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Vajradhara and Prajnaparamita (circa 14th to 15th century), by an unknown artist, is displayed at the \u201cPassion is Volcanic\u201d exhibition in Singapore.
