{"id":51784,"date":"2026-05-12T15:58:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51784"},"modified":"2026-05-12T15:58:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:58:39","slug":"long-term-planning-helps-countries-build-climate-resilience-dpm-gan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51784","title":{"rendered":"Long-term planning helps countries build climate resilience: DPM Gan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Countries that have planned ahead, such as by diversifying their supply sources, are better placed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/unprecedented-energy-disruption-from-middle-east-conflict-govt-announces-support-measures?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">absorb external shocks like disruptions in oil markets,<\/span><\/a> said Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong on May 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cDisruptions in global oil and gas markets have shown how quickly external shocks can affect countries, businesses and households,\u201d he said, citing recent developments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The impact can be felt through higher electricity and transport costs, higher operating costs for businesses and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/economy\/higher-petrol-prices-drive-singapore-inflation-to-1-8-in-march?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">higher prices of everyday essentials.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Countries that have been diversifying their sources of supplies, strengthening their systems and organising themselves nationally \u201care better placed to absorb such shocks\u201d, DPM Gan added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the same way, planning ahead is needed for climate action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cEven as climate action has wavered in some countries, the impact of climate change has not slowed. The physics of climate change does not pause because global attention shifts elsewhere. This is why we must stay the course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Speaking at the launch of Go Green SG 2026, held at Naval Base Primary School, he emphasised the importance of resilience<!-- --> <!-- -->in fighting the<!-- --> <!-- -->impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Go Green SG is an annual movement led by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) to rally citizens, businesses and the community to take collective action towards a more environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Held from May 11 to June 28, the 2026 edition features more than 1,000 activities organised by around 500 partners, with some initiatives targeted at raising awareness about climate adaptation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cClimate resilience takes time to implement. Students grow and harvest greens, such as kangkung, in the garden to distribute to nearby residents via community <!-- -->fridge efforts<!-- -->. So by sharing about what we do and why, I hope this can show (the students) that there are ongoing efforts, and they don\u2019t have to do something so glamorous to make a mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Naval Base Primary School principal Richard Chia hopes his pupils\u2019 participation in sustainability projects and their work with community partners will help them to not only learn environmental concepts, but also develop values like empathy and stewardship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cYoung children are naturally curious and eager to take action. When they are given opportunities to participate in meaningful sustainability efforts, they begin to understand that their choices and actions matter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Also in attendance at the launch event were Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for <!-- -->Sustainability and the Environment<!-- --> Goh Hanyan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As part of Go Green SG 2026, some 100,000 pre-schoolers from around 2,000 schools will receive an activity book from MSE that will teach them about energy conservation, heat resilience, coastal protection and food security.
