GameStop has made a surprise US$55.5 billion bid to acquire eBay<\/b>, in what could become one of the more unexpected tech and retail takeover attempts in recent years.<\/p>\n
The unsolicited offer, led by GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen<\/b>, values eBay at US$125 per share in a 50-50 mix of cash and GameStop stock. That represents roughly a 20% premium over eBay\u2019s recent closing share price. Ryan has also reportedly indicated that GameStop is prepared to take the offer directly to shareholders if eBay\u2019s board rejects the proposal, effectively turning the move into a hostile takeover bid.<\/p>\n
Still, the deal raises plenty of questions almost immediately. GameStop\u2019s own market capitalisation sits at around US$12 billion, far below eBay\u2019s roughly US$46 billion valuation. That mismatch has already led to scepticism from analysts and investors questioning how GameStop plans to finance such a massive acquisition. According to MarketWatch, the retail company is seeking to bridge that gap through a mixture of debt financing, stock issuance and external investors, with TD Securities said to have already committed up to US$20 billion in financing support.<\/p>\n
According to Ryan via The Guardian, the idea is to combine GameStop\u2019s physical retail footprint with eBay\u2019s marketplace operations to create a stronger competitor against Amazon. He also reportedly believes the combined business could cut as much as US$2 billion in annual costs by trimming spending across areas like marketing, administration and product development.<\/p>\n
The market reaction has been mixed so far. eBay\u2019s share price climbed following news of the proposal, while GameStop shares reportedly fell as investors questioned the risks and scale of the deal.<\/p>\n
eBay has acknowledged receiving the proposal, but says its board is still reviewing the offer and has not made any further comments publicly.<\/p>\n
