{"id":51586,"date":"2026-05-11T19:26:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T11:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51586"},"modified":"2026-05-11T19:26:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T11:26:37","slug":"hong-kongs-2026-venice-biennale-pavilion-wows-the-crowds-to-sleep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51586","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong\u2019s 2026 Venice Biennale pavilion wows the crowds to sleep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.i-scmp.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1280x720\/public\/d8\/images\/canvas\/2026\/05\/11\/0a7c5384-dda8-4239-8922-acf6c6a0c6df_e4d4ff01.jpg?itok=UTtirQXo&amp;v=1778489504\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Koyo Kouoh, the late artistic director of the 2026 Venice Biennale who sadly died before the opening of the world\u2019s most watched international contemporary art exhibition, left behind a set of profound curatorial cues.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">She wanted \u201cIn Minor Keys\u201d, the title of this year\u2019s Biennale, to be a place where art slows you down enough to hear the voices of the ignored and the silenced, where differences can gather in \u201cconvivial collectivity\u201d and views are not screamed combatively.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">But this Biennale has been anything but quiet, from the daily anti-Russia and anti-Israel <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">protests<\/span> to the urgent alarms about planetary doom issued without subtlety or apology at Florentina Holzinger\u2019s Austria pavilion, which has most certainly stolen the limelight.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">There are exceptions, however. The <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Hong Kong exhibition<\/span>, titled \u201cFermata\u201d, meaning \u201cstop\u201d in Italian, is like one of those obedient students who eagerly follow the rules to the letter in an otherwise unruly classroom. It is certainly in a \u201cminor key\u201d. But also like a submissive student sitting quietly in the back row, it does not make perceptible statements.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">On the first public day of the Biennale, on May 9, I found three visitors mellowed to the point of dozing off in the dimly lit back room at Campo della Tana, the regular venue for Hong Kong\u2019s collateral exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This is where Kingsley Ng Siu-king\u2019s <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Laundry Nocturne<\/em> (2026) is being staged.
