He also keeps up with birdwatching<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" data-testid=\"article-body-container\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">AS THE chairman of the Singapore Management University (SMU) board of trustees strides into the meeting room, one thing is noticeable: He is not wearing a tie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For Piyush Gupta, it is a pivot from his days as CEO of DBS, when he wore one in the bank\u2019s signature red with his sharp suits and carried a briefcase. These days, he shoulders a simple backpack.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But once settled in for the interview with <em>The Business Times<\/em>, Gupta is the same erudite speaker he has always been, discoursing on topics as diverse as meditation, conservation and education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">And despite having spent 45 years of his career in banking \u2013 15 of them at DBS which he helped shape into a regional powerhouse \u2013 he dwells very little on the past.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"article-inline-youtube-component\">\n<div class=\"paragraph--type-youtube mb-5 paragraph paragraph--type-remove-video paragraph--view-mode-manual \">\n<div class=\"rendered-content-wrapper ratio ratio-16x9\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u201cI don\u2019t think of legacy\u201d: Piyush Gupta on life after DBS, bird watching and rewirement\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bCXnQfs2lf4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Plan, plan and plan, because you are likely to live to 100\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">This is, after all, an interview with him about his new phase of life, after\u00a0stepping down from the bank at the end of March 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Leaving at the pinnacle of one\u2019s success can be a terrifying prospect for many, but his departure was something that he proactively engineered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"component-container\" class=\"container px-0 no-print\">\n<div data-testid=\"article-inside-btg-newsletter-component\" class=\"track-impression rounded-lg border border-gray-175 bg-white px-6 py-8 text-center shadow-[0px_4px_32px_0px_rgba(0,0,0,0.05)] no-print mb-6 lg:-mx-8\" data-section-name=\"newsletter\" data-section-label=\"decoding asia 1\">\n<h3 class=\"mb-2 font-lct text-7xl font-normal leading-snug -tracking-2%\">Navigate Asia in<br \/>a new global order<\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-lct text-lg font-normal leading-snug -tracking-2%\">Get the insights delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Years ago, when his early attempt at a startup failed, he fell into depression. \u201cThat lesson stayed with me. I said that when I retire or rewire, I\u2019ll do it more sensibly and plan for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The key point here, he said, is to think of life in terms of phases. Hindu tradition divides it into four stages, starting with life as a student, then a householder, followed by the retirement stage and finally, the renunciation stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gupta said: \u201cAs you get into a quasi retired life, you give back and finally, you get into a life of solitude.\u201d \u00a0He pointed out that just 150 years ago, there was no such concept as an \u201cadolescent\u201d phase because people started working in their teens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"article-pull-quote-component\" class=\"mb-4 md:mb-6\">\n<blockquote class=\"mb-1\" data-testid=\"pull-quote-component-quote\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap mb-4 font-lct text-4xl tracking-2% text-gray-850\"><span>\u201c<\/span>As you get into a quasi retired life, you give back and finally, you get into a life of solitude.<span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap mb-0 font-public-sans text-xs font-semibold tracking-2% text-gray-750 md:text-base md:text-gray-850\">Former DBS chief Piyush Gupta<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Another new phase has evolved, he said:<strong> <\/strong>\u201cWe are currently in the phase of creating a completely new life phase between the ages of 60 and 75, which is the silver-haired phase, where you have retired, but are still active with some form of work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The 66-year old<strong> <\/strong>Gupta does not blink an eye at the prospect of being a centenarian: \u201cThe 100-year lifespan is going to happen to all of us. In your 80s, mobility may be restricted, but I didn\u2019t want to look back and say I did banking for 60 years and nothing else, so I planned to step down (from my post at DBS) at 65 \u2013 and have about 15 years to do what I want to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">With travel on his to-do list post-DBS, he quickly ticked off destinations such as the Himalayas, the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, and Zambia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But travel aside, he consciously thought about \u201cfinding things to do which will serve my interest, but allow me to make an impact (on society)\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Making an impact at Mandai and in education\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Birdwatching is not a pastime often associated with the world of finance. His interest in the feathered kind cropped up when he interviewed for his first job decades ago with<strong> <\/strong>financial-services giant Citi; he admits he was stumped for a coherent answer when asked the reason for his fancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He now has a more reasoned response: \u201cI find it really helps to soothe the mind. You\u2019ve got to have patience. To me, it is actually quite meditative. Peace of mind, if you can achieve that, whether through meditation or through bird watching, is helpful to being an effective leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He disclosed a birdwatching insider\u2019s secret \u2013 that<strong> <\/strong>near Gardens by the Bay is a pond, a little bit of wilderness in the middle of urban Singapore. \u201cIn the morning, it\u2019s teeming with birds,\u201d he said, beaming.  \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The bigger picture \u2013 and it is no surprise that he has one in mind \u2013 is that birds point to the state of nature. \u201cYou know, birds are ambassadors for nature. So bird life and bird flyways tell you whether the underlying nature is healthy or not, and that response tells you about the risk to the planet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He is a member of BirdLife International Advisory Group which supports the non-governmental organisation based in the UK. He also sits on the\u00a0global steering committee of an advocacy group called Campaign for Nature. Comprising an international Who\u2019s Who, the group has called on world leaders to take bold action to support a global goal to protect at least 30 per cent of the planet\u2019s land and oceans by 2030.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/2ec02ba2bf1c976037c3148338617121da94bc59e1967aaf866294c700edae6c\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Piyush\u2019s interest in birdwatching cropped up when he interviewed for his first job decades ago with financial-services giant Citi. <span>PHOTO: BT FILE<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gupta also chairs the Mandai Wildlife Group. The wildlife parks at Mandai have in recent years been a hive of activity, rejuvenated with new attractions and facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Being on the board, he needs to heed the returns on investment dollars in these parks, but beyond the cost-benefit analysis is a bigger picture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He declared: \u201cThe big impact of any zoo or any park today is not just entertainment. It is advocacy for conservation. How do you sensitise young people, the next generation, about biodiversity, about nature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">There are the obvious challenges to increasing visitor numbers to get that message out,<strong> <\/strong>and these include Singapore\u2019s population size, the number of inbound visitors and even the country\u2019s humid weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But these are not insurmountable hurdles to him; in fact, they are just the\u00a0sort of challenges that this banker-turned-nature-champion relishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWe have to position the parks to serve our advocacy purpose, to serve an entertainment purpose, to continue to be what Singaporeans want, as their zoo; in other words, bring it all together to create something that is meaningful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Education is another area where Gupta aims to make an impact, so it was serendipitous that he ended up at the Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2023 as its chairman. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">It is not his first involvement in education:<strong> <\/strong>He was on the board of the international school where his children were enrolled; he has also chaired SMU\u2019s Sim Kee Boon Institute, which focuses on research in financial economics, particularly in areas like financial inclusion, fintech and green finance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Of his role in SMU, he said: \u201cI wanted a platform where I could help shape tertiary education. And now with artificial intelligence, it is critical to see how you are going to think about the future of education.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"article-pull-quote-component\" class=\"mb-4 md:mb-6\">\n<blockquote class=\"mb-1\" data-testid=\"pull-quote-component-quote\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap mb-4 font-lct text-4xl tracking-2% text-gray-850\"><span>\u201c<\/span>I think we should disband majors, and we should have people to focus on doing 10 minors. Ten minors means you know enough about 10 disciplines. Quintessential education is about\u00a0training the mind.<span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap mb-0 font-public-sans text-xs font-semibold tracking-2% text-gray-750 md:text-base md:text-gray-850\">Piyush Gupta<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gupta poses the thought-provoking question: \u201cShould we be even having programmes anymore? Should we have an economics school, a law school, and an accounting school? If you think about education in the future, should we just be disbanding all the schools?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">If this came to pass, it would be controversial, and he is well aware of it. \u201cThere is a view that the future of education is going to be horizontal, right? Domain knowledge will be less relevant. It\u2019s not that I believe that you should do it, but I want to start people to start thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gupta sees AI and generative AI as reducing the need to have domain knowledge. \u201cBut you need to know enough to be able to connect the dots. You need to be able to understand. How do you engage with people with empathy, as well? So that\u2019s a very different education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">His thinking? \u201cI think we should disband majors, and we should have people to focus on doing 10 minors. Ten minors means you know enough about 10 disciplines. Quintessential education is about\u00a0training the mind. And so &#8230; education is going to be about training the mind and training the context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He acknowledged that the schools in the US already offer this to an extent through their liberal arts education programmes, although there has lately been more of a move towards early specialisation for students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gupta is keen for SMU teaching to be even more experiential, to include frequent regional exposure and offer more internships and exchange programmes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Leadership<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Such provocative statements on education for example, can be a way of leading to transformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Of the process of change within organisations, he said it is about the culture, talent and people, and vitally, about \u201ccreating a culture in which it is OK to question\u201d.\u00a0Discussion and even disagreements are the starting point for meaningful dialogue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/bfc57eda8517b5784b9f52e52f0a38b48132342365b1cb4356992cc5a5fc43d1\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Leaving at the pinnacle of one\u2019s success can be a terrifying prospect for many, but for Gupta, seen here in 2016, his departure was something that he proactively engineered. <span>PHOTO: REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cMost board meetings and boardrooms are perfunctory. There\u2019s a formality process, with an agenda. To me, boards are eight or 10 wise people who are free consultants, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cYou pay an arm and a leg when you employ consultants, so why not\u00a0 leverage the free consultancy (of the board) and make it interactive? But to make it interactive, you have got to create an environment where it\u2019s OK to ask and talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Another aspect relevant<strong> <\/strong>to the issue of leadership and transformation is the hierarchy that is hampering many organisations. \u201cFor the companies I\u2019m fortunate to be involved with, the first thing I try to do is break that down. I insist on first names. And it takes time at every company for them to stop calling me \u2018chairman\u2019 and to call me \u2018Piyush\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">What\u2019s on the horizon?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gupta can hardly be said to have \u201cretired\u201d. He sees it as a period of \u201crewiring\u201d instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He has been appointed to the council of presidential advisers; in late 2025, he was the 17th SR Nathan Fellow, delivering a three-part lecture series on the future of finance in Singapore at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">In April, he became the chairman of Keppel, partly, as he puts it, because he wanted to work with a publicly listed company. He saw Keppel\u2019s transformation from an operator into an asset manager as an opportunity to further contribute to the effort.  \u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"article-pull-quote-component\" class=\"mb-4 md:mb-6\">\n<blockquote class=\"mb-1\" data-testid=\"pull-quote-component-quote\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap mb-4 font-lct text-4xl tracking-2% text-gray-850\"><span>\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ll continue to be involved with education, healthcare and the arts. I\u2019ll continue to give back, but in different forms.<span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap mb-0 font-public-sans text-xs font-semibold tracking-2% text-gray-750 md:text-base md:text-gray-850\">SMU chair Piyush Gupta<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Even with all this on his plate, Gupta still has plans on other fronts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">His eye is on India, the country of his birth. With its US$4 trillion-plus economy, it offers massive opportunities for businesses. He said: \u201cIndia needs capital, and this is something Singapore can provide. For example, in the area of sustainable infrastructure, there are many win-win opportunities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">While there are economic moves<strong> <\/strong>to engage India, for example through the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable \u2013 a key mechanism to drive cooperation in various areas \u2013 Gupta hopes the linkages will deepen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI want to contribute towards Singapore-India connectivity and relations. Having been a Singaporean these last 17 years, I think I can make that corridor work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For someone who has always been on the go, it is perhaps understandable that life for him has not really been about \u201cwinding down\u201d post-DBS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">When asked for his thoughts about the \u201cwhat\u2019s next\u201d, and what he foresees doing in his 80s, he mused and replied that he would likely by then cease<strong> <\/strong>\u201cformal engagement with companies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But he would remain committed to working for society at large, or work with non-governmental organisations. He said resolutely: \u201cI\u2019ll continue to be involved with education, healthcare and the arts.
