A wise idea — it’s a great way to get your tykes, who are too young to play a full 3D Mario game, interested in Nintendo. But now comes the tough question: Where do you go from there? After all, if your kid loved the movie, there’s a good chance they’re going to be obsessed with Mario and his friends for a good year until something new comes along. You’re going to need something that can save you from having to rewatch the same movie over and over, and it’s not like there are tons of other Nintendo movies to choose from.

Thankfully, a potential answer to that conundrum is coming in just two weeks. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21. The upcoming platformer is the most kid-friendly game of the Nintendo Switch 2 era, with a focus on laid-back gameplay and cheery visuals. Considering that Yoshi just got his starring moment in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it couldn’t be landing at a better time for parents who want to get their kids from Nintendo movies to games.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a great kids game

Over the past decade, Nintendo has slowly been working out what a full-on Yoshi game is. Is it a puzzle game? A precise platformer? A touch-controlled high score chase game? Nintendo finally cracked the code in 2015 with Yoshi’s Wooly World, a low-stakes platformer focused on treasure-collecting rather than putting Yoshi in mortal danger. The sidekick’s next game, Yoshi’s Crafted World, only doubled down on that by making something even more relaxing. Those two games are some of Nintendo’s best entry points for its youngest players.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is set to continue that trend. Yoshi’s latest adventure finds him helping a sentient book named Mr. E. He’s a living nature field guide filled with animals, but he can’t see his own pages. Yoshi’s job is to help him investigate those critters, which takes him inside the book. That sets up the game’s charming illustrative art style that makes it feel like you’re playing a picture book.

Once inside, Yoshi meets different creatures and uses their unique abilities to discover secrets and collectibles. There’s some platforming and puzzle solving to be done, but the hook is simply around meeting some colorful animals and finding out what they do. What’s the deal with this frog-like animal? Interact with it, and you’ll find that it can blow bubbles that you can bounce off of. That idea is perfect for very young kids who aren’t quite ready for a movement-heavy 3D game that requires a lot of fast inputs. And as detailed in Polygon’s Yoshi and the Mysterious Book preview, the stakes are low: Yoshi can’t die in this one.

There are other kid-friendly Switch 2 games you could play with your kids if they’re dying to play in the Mario universe. Mario Kart World is fairly approachable, and Donkey Kong Bananza‘s chaotic two-player option is perfect for kids. But Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is positioned to be the best pick for parents looking for a Nintendo game that their youngest kids can actually play. If your kids simply can’t get enough of Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and demand more, keep an eye on this when it launches on May 21. It may just save you from another rewatch.

                    Related

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book won’t let you die, but it does let you vibe

Despite all the egg-tossing, you can’t hurt anyone and they can’t hurt you

So, you took your kid to see The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
