{"id":51144,"date":"2026-05-09T22:19:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T14:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51144"},"modified":"2026-05-09T22:19:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T14:19:46","slug":"pap-womens-wing-to-gather-womens-views-submit-recommendations-to-marriage-parenthood-workgroup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=51144","title":{"rendered":"PAP Women\u2019s Wing to gather women\u2019s views, submit recommendations to marriage, parenthood workgroup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->The PAP Women\u2019s Wing will gather perspectives and lived experiences from women in Singapore to provide recommendations to the Government\u2019s new inter-agency Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It will gather feedback through listening sessions with the public from May to November. These sessions will cover four broad areas: navigating parenting pressures; fertility; the journey of finding a partner and getting married; and the decision to have children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The first session was held on May 2, with about 130 participants discussing the issue of parenting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Sim Ann, who chairs the PAP Women\u2019s Wing, said it welcomes a reset in Singapore\u2019s approach towards supporting marriage and parenthood, and will play its part in distilling women\u2019s lived experiences and perspectives for the Government\u2019s consideration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She made this announcement at a Mother\u2019s Day celebration event on May 9 in Rochester Park, attended by about 250 PAP Women\u2019s Wing activists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The wing will also delve into additional areas beyond the four themes, said Ms Sim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cYour voices and your lived experiences must form the backbone of our recommendations that we intend to submit to the workgroup and to the Government,\u201d she told the audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/new-workgroup-to-drive-marriage-and-parenthood-reset-in-spore-amid-record-low-fertility?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">new inter-agency workgroup<\/span><\/a> was announced during the Budget debate in February after Singapore\u2019s total fertility rate fell to a historic low of 0.87 in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The<!-- --> group is chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office Indranee Rajah, who is also Second Minister for Finance and National Development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its members include Minister of State for Digital Development and Information (MDDI) and Health Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth and Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash, and Minister of State for MDDI and Education Jasmin Lau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The work group will release a full report in early 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Sim, who is Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, said the topic of marriage and parenthood has occupied the attention of the Women\u2019s Wing for some time, and it has been tracking and reflecting the evolving perspectives of Singapore women on this issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe know the issue is complex. The decision to start a family is deeply personal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some women say they feel immense pressure to raise children right or ensure their child has good opportunities to excel, while others feel anxious over the rising cost of living<!-- --> <!-- -->or<!-- --> <!-- -->the fear that having a child may mean sacrificing personal time or a hard-earned career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThese are all valid perspectives. Our lived realities and expectations are evolving all the time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The next listening session is planned for June 6 on the topic of fertility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhile the Government has made meaningful moves towards better supporting women\u2019s fertility in the last decade, it still remains a significant challenge for some,\u201d said Ms Sim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cOne aspect is the biological and professional crossroads many women face \u2013 how do we better support those undergoing fertility treatments while also seeking to give the best at their careers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Other sessions will cover topics such as finding a partner and getting married, and whether having children still fits into a Singaporean\u2019s idea of married life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On getting married, Ms Sim said: \u201cWe need to examine the \u2018upstream\u2019 realities prior to parenthood.
