{"id":50666,"date":"2026-05-08T01:50:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T17:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=50666"},"modified":"2026-05-08T01:50:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T17:50:37","slug":"content-creator-sparks-debate-after-saying-she-understood-what-being-a-minority-feels-like-after-leaving-spore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=50666","title":{"rendered":"Content creator sparks debate after saying she understood what being a \u2018minority\u2019 feels like after leaving S\u2019pore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A Singaporean travel content creator recently shared her experience of \u201cunderstanding what being a \u2018minority\u2019 feels like\u201d during her time abroad \u2014 garnering heated responses online as netizens slammed her for lacking empathy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Olivia, who goes by @olliechinny on TikTok, said in a post on May 1: \u201cIt took LEAVING Singapore for me to finally understand what being a \u2018minority\u2019 feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In the post, the 33-year-old said that she \u201cnever had to question\u201d her sense of belonging when residing in Singapore, as she is ethnically Chinese.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Growing up in an \u201cartificially homogenous environment\u201d \u2014 including a Chinese school and church \u2014 meant she had \u201clittle\u201d interaction with peers from other races or cultures. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">\u2018This is what it feels like to be not fully seen\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">However, moving to Switzerland in 2019 due to family reasons and work marked a significant change.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"my-lg md:my-xl\">\n<p><hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 lg:hidden\"\/><span class=\"text-grayscale-400 text-14 leading-16 font-primary text-center lg:text-left p-sm\">Scroll to continue reading<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 my-md\"\/>\n<hr class=\"my-md border-grayscale-100\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cI was suddenly hyper-aware of how different I am and how I looked as a yellow-skinned Asian,\u201d she wrote. \u201cHow rare it was to see someone who reflected me here, and how that subconsciously shapes your confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Olivia also recounted that others often assumed she was from China, Japan, or South Korea without first asking her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Being immersed in a culture different from her own meant she sometimes had to pretend to understand underlying jokes, smiling and nodding while \u201ctrying to fill in the blanks\u201d silently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cSo\u2026 This is what it feels like to be not fully seen. That this was probably also how my Malay and Indian colleagues might have felt back home,\u201d she wrote, citing instances where conversations defaulted to Mandarin and jokes based on culturally specific references. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just diversity on paper. It\u2019s more about how we make every individual feel like they belong in the room,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Netizens split over post<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Many netizens were supportive of the post, recounting similar experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">One said that living abroad would encourage people to \u201cbe more understanding of others\u201d, while another said that it \u201cchanges your awareness of identity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cNever too late to learn,\u201d another netizen said. \u201cProud of you for coming to a realisation of the daily struggles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">However, others took issue with the post, including <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@brownmasc\/video\/7636353302896151828\" target=\"_blank\">TikToker @brownmasc, who said she was \u201calready pissed off\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry, was empathy not available in Singapore?\u201d she asks in a May 5 post which received over 151,100 views. In the video, she said Olivia\u2019s post suggested that she did not \u201clisten to brown people or minorities in Singapore\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\"><a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@boblet21\/video\/7636430994152656146\" target=\"_blank\">Another TikToker, @Boblet Lee Pichay,<\/a> said that different ethnic groups face unique stereotypes that cannot be fully understood by those from other races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cHowever, it shouldn\u2019t take you going to another country to empathise with us. Our struggle is not some sort of aesthetic,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">\u2018Intellectual to lived understanding\u2019: Content creator responds<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Speaking to Stomp, Olivia explained that her description of growing up in an insular environment may have been misinterpreted as her being \u201cpreviously completely unaware of racial issues or lacking empathy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She added that many people who grow up within the majority demographic in Singapore care about racial inequalities. \u201cBut awareness and lived understanding are not always the same thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean the empathy was absent before, it simply moves from intellectual understanding to lived understanding,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Olivia added that living abroad expanded her self-awareness, prompting her to reflect on the ways \u201cprivilege can sometimes go unnoticed\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She hopes such conversations will encourage others to examine \u201cblind spots\u201d, urging mindfulness in interactions with others.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"bg-primary-100 h-px border-0 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"\/>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-xl rounded-xl border border-primary-100 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/assets\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
