{"id":50613,"date":"2026-05-07T21:03:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T13:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=50613"},"modified":"2026-05-07T21:03:42","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T13:03:42","slug":"crocodile-spotted-in-waters-off-sentosa-cove-caught-and-euthanised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=50613","title":{"rendered":"Crocodile spotted in waters off Sentosa Cove caught and euthanised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 A crocodile that was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/search-for-crocodile-spotted-in-waters-off-sentosa-cove-under-way-water-activities-suspended?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> spotted in the waters off Sentosa Cove on the evening of May 6<\/span><\/a> has been caught and put down. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The National Parks Board (NParks) said in a <!-- -->statement on May 7<!-- --> that the reptile was trapped and removed by NParks contractors <!-- -->at about 9pm on May 6 off Sentosa Cove<!-- -->. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <!-- -->approximately 2m-long<!-- --> crocodile was sedated and humanely put down, said <!-- -->NParks group director of wildlife management How Choon Beng<!-- -->. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that the decision was made in view of public safety and the lack of relocation options.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve \u2013 which currently houses a population of <!-- -->about 20<!-- --> crocodiles \u2013 is not a suitable release site for the trapped crocodile, Mr How said, adding that NParks had previously relocated a small crocodile there in <!-- -->2021<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Relocation also runs the risk of the reptile \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/simply-science-what-you-need-to-know-about-saltwater-crocodiles-after-recent-sightings?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">an estuarine crocodile<\/span><\/a> (<i>Crocodylus porosus<\/i>) \u2013 returning to where it was captured, posing public safety concerns, added Mr How. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">NParks had checked with Mandai Wildlife Group, which could not take the crocodile into its collections, Mr How said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mandai Wildlife Group said in a statement on <!-- -->May 7<!-- --> that decisions to accept any animal into its care are guided by its ability to meet the highest standards of welfare and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It added that it also considers implications for its existing animal population and conservation commitments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAfter careful assessment, we determined that we were not in a position to provide a placement that would meet these standards for this animal,\u201d said its spokesperson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThis is a difficult situation, and this was not a decision we made lightly,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Search on for crocodile spotted off Sentosa Cove; water activities suspended\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qQe0h2yNOq4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The crocodile sighting on <!-- -->May 6 was at least the second one in 2026<!-- --> in the waters off Sentosa Cove.
