While these conversations reportedly began before the current wave of component shortages, supply chain pressures have since elevated their urgency.

The move comes amid broader supply constraints affecting Apple’s product lineup. During a recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that it could take “several months” for the supply of the Mac mini and Mac Studio to catch up with demand. This highlights the challenges of relying on a single manufacturing partner.

However, shifting away from TSMC will not be straightforward. Bloomberg notes that both Intel and Samsung are still working to match TSMC’s scale, yield, and advanced manufacturing capabilities. Apple is also said to have reservations about using non-TSMC chips in its devices, meaning any transition would likely be gradual if it materialises at all.

Still, there are signs Apple has been exploring alternatives for some time. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggested that Apple could tap Intel to produce lower-end M-series chips as early as the second quarter of 2027.

While TSMC is likely to remain the main chip supplier in the near term, Apple’s strategy to diversify its chip suppliers could help the company better navigate geopolitical risks and supply chain disruptions, particularly in today’s fractured world.

Source: Bloomberg via 9to5Mac

Apple is reportedly looking to reduce its reliance on TSMC for chip production, as it explores a more diversified manufacturing strategy.
