Apple is reportedly looking to reduce its reliance on TSMC for chip production, as it explores a more diversified manufacturing strategy.<\/p>\n
According to Bloomberg, Apple is in early-stage discussions with Intel and has planned visits to a Samsung facility in Texas <\/b>as part of efforts to expand domestic chip production. While these conversations reportedly began before the current wave of component shortages, supply chain pressures have since elevated their urgency.<\/p>\n
The move comes amid broader supply constraints affecting Apple\u2019s product lineup. During a recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that it could take \u201cseveral months\u201d for <\/b>the supply of the Mac mini and Mac Studio to catch up with demand<\/b>. This highlights the challenges of relying on a single manufacturing partner.<\/p>\n
However, shifting away from TSMC will not be straightforward. Bloomberg notes that both Intel and Samsung are still working to match TSMC\u2019s scale<\/b>, yield<\/b>, and advanced manufacturing capabilities<\/b>. Apple is also said to have r<\/b>eservations about using non-TSMC chips in its devices, meaning any transition would likely be gradual if it materialises at all.<\/p>\n
Still, there are signs Apple has been exploring alternatives for some time. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggested that Apple could tap Intel to produce lower-end M-series chips<\/b> as early as the second quarter of 2027.<\/p>\n
