{"id":50084,"date":"2026-05-06T00:31:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=50084"},"modified":"2026-05-06T00:31:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:31:38","slug":"australian-youtuber-goes-on-singapore-food-adventure-as-taxi-drivers-decide-what-she-eats-lifestyle-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=50084","title":{"rendered":"Australian YouTuber goes on Singapore food adventure as taxi drivers decide what she eats, Lifestyle News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A YouTuber from Australia recently went on a food adventure in Singapore with some help from some taxi drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Lyons \u2014 also known as Blondie in China \u2014 shared her experience in a YouTube video posted on April 29.<\/p>\n<p>The concept was simple: Get into a cab and ask the driver to take her to eat their favourite food.<\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the adventure, the first driver brought Amy to Old Airport Road Food Centre for <em>lor mee <\/em>and <em>chendol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While the <em>lor mee<\/em> stall in question was closed, she managed to try a bowl of <em>chendol <\/em>from Nyonya Chendol, which she praised for being &#8220;not too sweet&#8221; and having a variety of textures.<\/p>\n<p>Amy ran into a friendly trio of middle-aged men seated right in front of the stall \u2014 \u00a0one of whom recognised her and insisted on paying for her dessert.<\/p>\n<p>He also suggested she try the oyster omelette at Xing Lee Cooked Food.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The chef, he&#8217;s been cooking this (oyster omelette) for 40 years,&#8221; the uncle told Amy as she tucked into the dish.<\/p>\n<p>Old Airport Road Food Centre is a bustling food haven, famous for its <em>lor mee, char kway teow<\/em> and prawn noodles amongst other hawker fare.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I let Singapore taxi drivers decide everything I ate...\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p1EmfAazZzY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Amy&#8217;s new friends then dropped her off at Roxy Centre for Janggut Laksa, which has been serving up the original Katong Laksa since the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>This iconic eatery was also recommended to her by the first taxi driver she met.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian content creator, who has lived in China for many years, told the driver that she had previously tried Penang-style Assam Laksa in Malaysia but she&#8217;d be having the Singaporean version for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared to spark the longtime cross-border food rivalry, with the cabby telling her: &#8220;Penang style not nice! It&#8217;s a bit sour, Singapore style is different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And different it was. Amy was pleasantly surprised by the dish, especially its broth, describing it as &#8220;layered and nuanced&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>[[nid:678898]]<\/p>\n<p>When she boarded her second taxi and asked the cabby for food recommendations, he sheepishly admitted he was not much of a foodie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You got into the wrong taxi,&#8221; he joked.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, he drove her to Hong Lim Market &amp; Food Centre and told her to give the chicken curry noodles at Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee a try.<\/p>\n<p>Amy had high praise for Heng Kee&#8217;s signature dish, which came with a generous serving of chicken, tofu and potato.
