A TikToker has shared his frustration after being approached by two missionaries who told him he was on the \u201cwrong path\u201d and at risk of going to hell.<\/p>\n
In the 104-second clip captioned \u201cLEAVE ME ALONE LA\u201d, content creator @pale.nerves, who goes by the name Kai, said he was talking to a client on his mobile phone at a bench outside Plaza Singapura when two men, whom he described as being in their 20s, approached him.<\/p>\n
According to Kai, it was clear he was on the phone<\/a>, but that did not stop the pair from trying to get his attention \u2014 by waving in front of him.<\/p>\n After putting his client on hold, he asked what they wanted. One of them asked: \u201cDo you have a minute to talk about Jesus Christ?\u201d<\/p>\n Kai said he declined politely, explaining that he was on a call. However, the men persisted, saying it would only take a minute.<\/p>\n He said he remained respectful, and reiterated that he was busy, but according to Kai, one of them then told him: \u201cYo, I just don\u2019t want to see you go to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n The man then tried to hand a pamphlet to Kai, which he refused. <\/p>\n \u201cI told him respectfully, I am Buddhist \u2014 like, \u2018Amituofo\u2019 (Amitabha, a Buddhist expression of greeting and gratitude) vibes, you know,\u201d Kai said. <\/p>\n \u201cAnd this boy, he looks at me and tells me, \u2018that\u2019s the wrong path\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n That was when Kai lost his temper and told them he was not interested. <\/p>\n \u201cI respect all religions,\u201d he said. \u201cBut telling me my religion is the wrong path is crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n The video, shared on April 29, has since garnered more than 198,300 views, 16,000 reactions and 170 comments.<\/p>\n Many online users sympathised with Kai, with some expressing shock and calling the blunt approach inappropriate.<\/p>\n \u201cLike… why so rude to begin with?\u201d commented one.<\/p>\n Another suggested: \u201cShould ask them back, \u2018Don\u2019t your religion teach you to respect other religions? Mine does. If yours didn\u2019t then you are on the wrong path\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n Others said such remarks could be seen as disrespectful, especially in a multireligious society. \u201cPeople need to learn how to respect other religions,\u201d said one.<\/p>\n Some users speculated that the men were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons, sharing similar encounters in various locations.<\/p>\n \u201cThey are probably Mormons. Happened to me once around Dhoby Ghaut MRT. Ignored him as long as possible until he got upset and started going on a rant of me having sin and going to hell etc,\u201d said one netizen. <\/p>\n While Kai did not confirm this, he replied \u201cya\u201d to a comment asking if they were wearing something resembling a \u201cschool uniform\u201d.<\/p>\n Several netizens wondered whether what the missionaries did was illegal. <\/p>\n \u201cThis is straight up harassment. Can the authorities do something about it?\u201d one asked.<\/p>\n While public preaching is not illegal in Singapore, proselytising must be \u201cexercised very sensitively\u201d<\/a> and not be at the expense of communal harmony.<\/p>\n One netizen pointed out: \u201cInsulting a particular religion and aggressive proselytising is chargeable under Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act<\/a>.
