Counterpoint Research expects rising memory prices to drag down smartphone shipments this year.

Apple has traditionally enjoyed a pricing advantage thanks to its massive scale of procurement. It has traditionally been one of the largest memory buyers in the industry. However, that edge is narrowing as AI-driven companies like NVIDIA place even larger orders and commit billions in upfront payments to secure supply, tightening availability for other players.

The company appears to have anticipated these constraints. Reports suggest the staggered launch of the iPhone 18 lineup could be part of a broader strategy to manage component supply better and spread demand over time.

Whether these rising costs will translate into higher iPhone prices remains uncertain. Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan believes Apple may hold prices steady in the near term to maintain competitiveness and capture market share, even as manufacturing costs climb. Analyst Jeff Pu shared a similar forecast on the pricing strategy for the iPhone 18 Pro.

Looking further ahead, however, price increases may be harder to avoid. SK Group’s chairman has warned that memory supply constraints could persist until 2030, which raises the possibility that these increased costs will, at some point, be passed on to consumers.

Source: Financial Times via MacRumors

Apple could face a sharp increase in iPhone memory costs next year, as supply pressures intensify across the entire industry.
