machine<\/span><\/a>\u00a0before putting it back has been allowed to leave Singapore for a school-related trip to the Philippines in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On April 29, a district court approved Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien\u2019s application to leave the country to go to Manila for a \u201cfield experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The trip is a requirement for him to graduate, said defence lawyer Kanthan\u00a0Raghavendra from Kalidass Law Corporation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The 18-year-old French national, who is a student at ESSEC Business School located at one-north, is expected to be away from May 2 to 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Among his conditions, he has to remain contactable by the investigating officer (IO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Maximilien must also surrender his passport to the IO, or an officer acting under the latter\u2019s direction, within 24 hours upon returning to Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">An additional bail of $5,000 has to be provided and a school representative has agreed to be his bailor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His case will be mentioned again in court on May 29. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On April 24, Maximilien<!-- --> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/teen-who-allegedly-licked-ijooz-straw-before-putting-it-back-in-machine-charged-with-mischief?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">was charged with committing mischief<\/span><\/a> and being a public nuisance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He allegedly committed the offences at Goldhill Centre in Thomson Road on or around March 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Maximilien is accused of licking a straw from an iJooz machine before he put it back into the straw dispenser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He allegedly filmed himself performing the act\u00a0and uploaded the clip on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Court documents stated that iJooz, known for its <!-- -->vending<!-- --> machines that serve freshly squeezed orange juice, had to replace all 500 straws in the dispenser after the alleged incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The video surfaced online on March 12 and quickly went viral, sparking shock and concern among netizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For committing mischief, an offender can be jailed for up to two years, fined or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The punishment for being a public nuisance is a jail term of up to three months, a fine of up to
