{"id":47980,"date":"2026-04-28T07:37:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T23:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=47980"},"modified":"2026-04-28T07:37:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T23:37:38","slug":"amoeba-film-tan-siyous-award-winning-singaporean-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=47980","title":{"rendered":"Amoeba film: Tan Siyou&#8217;s award-winning Singaporean cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Four school girls in an all-girls\u2019 school find their own extracurricular activities \u2014 they create their own secret gang and cement their sisterhood in a cave found at a construction site, and hunt for a ghost using a camcorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The premise for Amoeba, a Singaporean film by Tan Siyou, might sound like a fever dream on paper, but it manages to endear and resonate with audiences abroad.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Since premiering at the Toronto Film Festival 2025 in September, Amoeba has had a great run in the film festival circuit. It\u2019s picked up seven awards at the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia, the QCinema International Film Festival in the Philippines, and the Pingyao International Film Festival in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">And finally, on March 26, it returned home with a premiere at Filmhouse (the former Projector at Golden Mile Tower).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"taking-it-personal\" class=\"_subHeading1_1k87u_111 _base_1k87u_1\">Taking it personal<\/h2>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Much of Tan\u2019s first feature film is a reflection of her own formative years in an all-girls\u2019 secondary school in Singapore. \u201cIt feels a bit raw and naked, like my throbbing heart for everyone to see,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">A coming-of-age story that examines the complexities of young female friendships within the strict confines of the education system, the film felt like a mirror of my own teenage years, growing up with sisters and attending a religious convent school. <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The film\u2019s characters, played by rising actresses Ranice Tay, Nicole Lee, Lim Shi-An, and Genevieve Tan, struggle to find their voices in a system that rewards conformity. A discovery of self and carving a path of their own, as the film reminds, requires rebellion in micro ways. Each knock against the hardened mould predetermined for them \u2014 a future at a prestigious university or as an athlete \u2014 reveals cracks that they choose to bury or dig deeper into.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">This exploration of self also ties strongly back to Tan\u2019s personal journey. She opined on gender stereotypes, the lack of support, and resistance to change in the arts here. \u201cWe could support our artistic and cultural workers more, in the sense that we shouldn\u2019t see it as frivolous.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">She mentioned her peers who are bogged down by daily life, unable to create the films, no matter how unique their stories are. In the US, she worked with production houses creating documentaries, music videos, and commercials, and did F&amp;B gigs, including\u00a0<u>bartending<\/u>\u00a0and waitressing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Feeling Singaporean abroad, she\u2019s treated as foreign when back.
