Classical music \u2013 in particular, opera \u2013 is often perceived as an elitist, old-fashioned<\/span> art form. Hong Kong\u2019s Anima Ensemble is challenging this perception with The Diary<\/em>.<\/div>\n

The original concept marries Dominick Argento\u2019s one-act opera A Water Bird Talk<\/em> and Leos Janacek\u2019s song cycle The Diary of One Who Disappeared<\/em> with contemporary dance, theatre and media art.<\/p>\n

Making opera an accessible experience is no easy task, but The Diary<\/em> conductor and co-artistic director Vivian Ip Wing-wun<\/span> believes that it can be achieved through innovation and the generation of new ideas.<\/div>\n

\u201cInstead of everyone just sitting and playing on stage, we want to engage the musicians and connect with the audience in different layers and meanings,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t be all in the pit, dressed in black. Our musicians are also actors and part of the drama.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2023, Ip co-founded Anima Ensemble with veteran concertmaster Nina Wong Sin-i. Their goal is to present \u201cunconventional contemporary chamber operas, musicals and chamber music\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
