{"id":47328,"date":"2026-04-25T15:58:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T07:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=47328"},"modified":"2026-04-25T15:58:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T07:58:40","slug":"singapore-man-with-als-starts-charitable-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=47328","title":{"rendered":"Singapore man with ALS starts charitable fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Mr Yeo Whee Jim, 52, has lost the ability to walk, to feed himself and to scratch an itch, among a growing list of<!-- --> <!-- -->functional tasks he can no longer do without help. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal disease that causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, has robbed him of his independence, it has not diminished his capacity \u201cto love and accept love\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Using payouts from his critical illness and other insurance policies, the widower with a 20-year-old daughter has donated a six-figure sum to set up a charitable fund to help young caregivers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI\u2019m already at the end of my life, and if I want to go, at least go with a big bang,\u201d said Mr Yeo, who used to run his own training consultancy firm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In an interview with The Sunday Times, he said<!-- --> <!-- -->in a calm and measured tone: \u201cI believe that to live is to give, and to live audaciously is to give generously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Diagnosed with ALS in 2023, Mr Yeo has lived past the halfway mark of the<!-- --> <!-- -->two to five years<!-- --> that patients are typically expected to survive after diagnosis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">However, his condition has since progressed to a stage where he<!-- --> <!-- -->relies on a ventilator around the clock to help him breathe,<!-- --> <!-- -->and even speaking has become tiring.<!-- -->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There is no cure for ALS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over time, the rare motor neurone disease\u00a0affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. The most common cause of death for patients is respiratory failure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In his final act in life, Mr Yeo has chosen to live audaciously \u2013 stepping<!-- --> <!-- -->into pursuits he had never imagined when he was <!-- -->hale and hearty<!-- -->. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Besides starting a charitable fund, he has a collection of poems and a book of his photographs and reflections published, and written a series of essays for The Straits Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These are part of his efforts to live \u2013 and leave behind a legacy for his only child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The younger of two children<!-- -->, Mr Yeo comes from a family of humble means. In 2014, about a year after his wife died from breast cancer at the age of 39, he used part of her insurance proceeds to start a bursary for pupils from lower-income families at Mayflower Primary School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: COURTESY OF YEO WHEE JIM<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In May 2025, he started the Lok Yan and Whee Jim Fund, with the Community Foundation of Singapore (CFS).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He declined to disclose the amount he donated,<!-- --> <!-- -->saying that it is more than the minimum of $200,000 needed to start a donor-advised fund at the CFS, and is \u201cnot an insignificant part\u201d of his wealth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Young caregivers are a<!-- --> <!-- -->cause close to his heart, having experienced first-hand the toll that serious illnesses take on families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">CFS director of communications and marketing Tricia Lee said that Mr Yeo\u2019s fund is an endowment fund, with donations invested and returns given to charitable causes of his choice. The CFS handles the administration and management of the fund.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On March 27, his late wife\u2019s birthday, his friend Yap Su-Yin launched a fund-raiser on online donation platform, <a href=\"http:\/\/giving.sg\/?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"><u>Giving.sg<\/u><\/span><\/a>, to raise $100,000 for the fund.<!-- -->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In two weeks, more than $50,000 had been raised. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Yap said the fund-raiser was meant to kick-start the disbursment of funds, so that<!-- --> <!-- -->Mr Yeo would have the chance to meet some of the beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This may not be possible if they wait until May 2027, when the endowment\u2019s first tranche of disbursements is due. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Yap said the fund is working with Care Singapore, a social service agency, to identify youth from lower-income families who are caring for parents<!-- --> <!-- -->who are ill or have a disability.<!-- --> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is not the first time Mr Yeo has channelled his pain into purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2014, about a year after his wife died from breast cancer at the age of 39, he used part of her insurance proceeds to start a bursary for pupils from lower-income families at Mayflower Primary School, where his daughter studied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMy wife was a very kind person, soft-spoken; sporty when she was younger. He was the institute director of governance and policy<!-- --> <!-- -->at the Civil Service College before leaving to start his own training consultancy in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Yeo, who is articulate, candid and introspective, said: \u201cI was enjoying life physically, emotionally and spiritually. I felt on top of the world. And my own business was doing well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He kept fit, going to the gym regularly, and could even do headstands and splits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Then came the ALS diagnosis, when \u201cGod brought me down to my knees\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI was resentful, angry, bitter and heart-broken. What did I do wrong?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Three years on, he has not completely come to terms with his debilitating disease yet, and still prays for a miracle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He depends on a caregiver and another domestic helper, who are both from Myanmar, to see to his every need. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over the course of two interviews at his condominium in Ang Mo Kio, each lasting between one and two hours, he took breaks to rest as his caregiver gave him sips of water.<!-- -->  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But Mr Yeo has learnt to focus on what he can still do, instead of dwelling on what he has lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI can still love and accept love. I can speak, which is amazing. I can still enjoy my food. I\u2019m still very much human,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I can bring people together. He was one of the panellists discussing his poetry book called Itinerary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: COURTESY OF YEO WHEE JIM<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A friend who used to teach creative writing guided him in poetry, while he also picked up tips from YouTube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said: \u201cSo I thought I either wise up and enjoy the ride&#8230; Or live life in bitterness, embarrassment and anger, not wanting to see anybody.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThat\u2019s a terrible way to live, because we humans are designed to (be) social. So I concluded: better, faster, get over this sense of embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While Mr Yeo has learnt to live with his disease, his illness and eventual death is not a topic that his daughter is comfortable discussing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He has appointed two guardians \u2013 a family member and a friend \u2013 to watch over her after his death. He has also set aside money in a trust for her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Asked what is most important to him now, he said: \u201cI think it\u2019s to leave my daughter with how she saw me live my life in this last phase. Opening up and allowing people to help me. Not being so arrogant and self-sufficient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cYet at the same time, doing my best to care for my caregivers, family, friends and strangers in need.
