This is the 75th instalment in a<\/em> biweekly series<\/em><\/span> profiling major Hong Kong pop culture figures of recent decades.<\/em><\/div>\n
When Tony Leung Ka-fai took to the stage of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre\u2019s Grand Theatre on April 19 to accept the best actor prize<\/span> at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), he became the only person to win that honour across five consecutive decades.<\/div>\n

Yet for the 68-year-old veteran, his accolades are a by-product of his endurance \u2013 he has previously admitted to keeping his statuettes in a cupboard under the staircase at home.<\/p>\n

Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Leung has navigated industry blacklists, underworld coercion, shifting political landscapes, tabloid scrutiny and his own missteps \u2013 including two drink-driving convictions in the 2000s \u2013 to remain Hong Kong cinema\u2019s ultimate survivor.<\/p>\n

The accidental actor<\/h3>\n

Born in Hong Kong in 1958, Leung received his early education in film by osmosis. His mother worked at the now-demolished Roxy Theatre in Causeway Bay, where he would sit under the dress circle, absorbing the sights and sounds of Hollywood blockbusters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
