{"id":46303,"date":"2026-04-21T21:30:36","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T13:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=46303"},"modified":"2026-04-21T21:30:36","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T13:30:36","slug":"refreshed-guide-for-local-food-manufacturing-firms-to-measure-progress-towards-sustainability-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=46303","title":{"rendered":"Refreshed guide for local food manufacturing firms to measure progress towards sustainability goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 A <!-- -->refreshed <!-- -->guide will set out progress indicators for food manufacturing companies here to track how sustainable their operations are, such as how much food and <!-- -->packaging waste<!-- --> they generate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Enterprise Singapore published an online playbook with these metrics <!-- -->on April 21<!-- --> as part of its efforts to keep <!-- -->local companies<!-- --> competitive globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Global security challenges have reshaped how food is produced and traded, said Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Stricter environmental standards and new sourcing requirements have made green practices necessary for export competitiveness, she added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Low was speaking at the launch of the refreshed Sustainability Playbook for Food Manufacturers at <!-- -->the<!-- --> international food and beverage trade show, Food &amp; Hospitality Asia (FHA), at Singapore Expo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It builds on a playbook first introduced in 2023 that outlined ways for food manufacturers to get started on their sustainability journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She noted that the evolving situation in Middle East \u2013 which has upended global trade flows \u2013 has also added to these challenges, increasing costs and disrupting access to some goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cCompanies that act early will be better positioned to maintain and secure market access, manage risks, and build resilience,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The playbook, which provides companies with milestones they can hit, focuses on three key areas \u2013 the first of which is to help companies access markets more easily and build their credibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This comes amid a trade environment where sustainability-related export requirements, such as emissions reporting and indicating the percentage of packaging made <!-- -->from<!-- --> recyclable and renewable materials, are key <!-- -->in<!-- --> certain markets like the US and Europe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The second focus area offers businesses practical suggestions to reduce energy, water and material costs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lastly, the playbook focuses on helping companies <!-- -->explore<!-- --> the circular economy, where they can recycle or upcycle <!-- -->by-products<!-- --> <!-- -->of<!-- --> the food manufacturing process, such as offcuts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For example, local noodle manufacturer Tan Seng Kee Foods used to discard hundreds of kilograms of raw dough trimmings that were left over from stamping dumpling skins. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a882a855aac62c781ce6c54aa3a8b03aa9fafe3cd16dfede9bf22a952e20799c?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a882a855aac62c781ce6c54aa3a8b03aa9fafe3cd16dfede9bf22a952e20799c?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px and max-width: 3999px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a882a855aac62c781ce6c54aa3a8b03aa9fafe3cd16dfede9bf22a952e20799c?w=900\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 4000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a882a855aac62c781ce6c54aa3a8b03aa9fafe3cd16dfede9bf22a952e20799c\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a882a855aac62c781ce6c54aa3a8b03aa9fafe3cd16dfede9bf22a952e20799c\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling at the launch of the refreshed Sustainability Playbook for Food Manufacturers at international food and beverage trade show, Food &amp; Hospitality Asia on April 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: INFORMA MARKETS<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The company now upcycles the trimmings into furikake (dried condiments sprinkled on rice) called Krunch-Up! that comes in local flavours such as mee soto, salted egg and chicken rice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Raymond Tan, who is managing director of Tan Seng Kee Foods\u00a0and president of the Singapore Food Manufacturers\u2019 Association, <!-- -->added <!-- -->that with water and energy input an important part of business operations, and <!-- -->high fuel costs currently<!-- -->, resource optimisation solutions provided in the playbook could help reduce operating costs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cost concerns have made sustainability efforts an added challenge for h<!-- -->omegrown brand SMH Food, which manufactures halal <!-- -->and non-halal <!-- -->frozen and chilled dim sum<!-- --> for local and overseas consumers<!-- -->. Its largest export market is the Middle East. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shipments to the Middle East have stopped completely<!-- --> for now<!-- --> and the price of raw materials have gone up, said SMH\u2019s director of strategic planning Johnson Tay. Locally, climbing diesel prices also have meant the<!-- --> firm had to streamline its <!-- -->delivery operations by <!-- -->cutting down on ad-hoc deliveries, like last-minute orders<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSustainability comes with a price &#8211; such as packaging materials, of which prices have gone up &#8211; but is the consumer willing to pay more for it?\u201d<!-- -->said <!-- -->SMH\u2019s director of business development Evan Tay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cInstead of increasing the price, we have been trying to absorb the loss, but it has gotten to the point where it\u2019s very difficult not to,\u201d said Mr Tay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As at 2023, Singapore\u2019s food manufacturing sector comprised of over 1,500 food manufacturing companies employing over 60,000 workers.
