{"id":45849,"date":"2026-04-20T04:17:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=45849"},"modified":"2026-04-20T04:17:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:17:40","slug":"singapore-changi-airport-welcomed-17-6-million-passengers-in-q1-2026-despite-the-middle-east-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=45849","title":{"rendered":"Singapore Changi Airport welcomed 17.6 million passengers in Q1 2026, despite the Middle East conflict"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"text\">\n<p>Singapore Changi Airport\u00a0registered\u00a017.6\u00a0million passenger movements from January to March 2026 (Q1),\u00a0a\u00a02.3%\u00a0increase\u00a0year-on-year.\u00a0Aircraft\u00a0movements,\u00a0comprising\u00a0landings and take-offs,\u00a0totalled\u00a095,300\u00a0for the quarter, up 1.4% compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Passenger traffic for the quarter was driven by\u00a0strong\u00a0demand\u00a0to and\u00a0from\u00a0North Asia and Europe,\u00a0underpinning\u00a0growth\u00a0despite\u00a0impact\u00a0from\u00a0the Middle East\u00a0geopolitical situation.\u00a0In March 2026, passenger traffic between Singapore and the Middle East fell 80% year-on-year.\u00a0Passenger traffic for the 12 months ended March 2026 rose\u00a02.9%\u00a0year-on-year to\u00a070.4\u00a0million, the\u00a0highest recorded\u00a0traffic at Changi over a 12-month period.<\/p>\n<h2>China posted the strongest growth in arrivals<\/h2>\n<p>Changi Airport\u2019s top five markets\u00a0for the\u00a0first\u00a0quarter\u00a0were\u00a0China, Indonesia, Malaysia,\u00a0Australia\u00a0and India.\u00a0Vietnam and China posted the strongest growth, among Changi\u2019s top 10 markets,\u00a0rising\u00a026.5% and\u00a017.7% year-on-year\u00a0respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The top five city links for the quarter were Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok,\u00a0Jakarta,\u00a0Tokyo\u00a0and Hong Kong, while\u00a0Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo\u00a0registered the strongest growth\u00a0among the\u00a010\u00a0busiest\u00a0routes.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0Q1 this year,\u00a0Changi Airport handled 517,000\u00a0tons\u00a0of airfreight throughput,\u00a07.6%\u00a0higher than\u00a0the same period\u00a0last year.\u202fAmid global trade uncertainties, Changi recorded growth\u00a0for\u00a0both\u00a0exports\u00a0and imports\u00a0compared to Q1\u00a02025.\u00a0Changi\u2019s top five air cargo markets\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0quarter\u00a0were\u00a0China, United States of America, Australia,\u00a0Hong Kong\u00a0and India.<\/p>\n<h2>Travel demand bolstered by growth in North Asia and Europe<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lim Ching Kiat<\/strong>, Changi Airport Group\u2019s Executive Vice President for Air Hub and Cargo Development said, \u201cTravel demand in the quarter remained\u00a0strong,\u00a0bolstered\u00a0by growth in North Asia and Europe. While there was some impact from the Middle East crisis, we\u00a0were\u00a0resilient\u00a0and\u00a0worked\u00a0closely with our airline partners in response to evolving demand and shifts in travel patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March,\u00a0amid flight cancellations on Middle Eastern routes,\u00a0various airlines\u00a0launched\u00a0about 90\u00a0additional\u00a0flights between Singapore and cities\u00a0such as\u00a0Frankfurt,\u00a0London, Munich, Muscat, Paris,\u00a0Perth\u00a0and Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u00a0will\u00a0continue to monitor the global geopolitical situation\u00a0and work with airlines to provide passengers with alternatives\u00a0across our\u00a0diversified network,\u201d\u00a0added\u00a0Mr. Lim.<\/p>\n<h2>New and reinstated services<\/h2>\n<p>Travellers\u00a0can look forward to more options across the region and beyond, as Changi Airport\u00a0continued\u00a0to expand its\u00a0city links\u00a0with new services in\u00a0the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Scoot\u00a0commenced\u00a0five\u00a0weekly flights to Chiang Rai in northern Thailand and\u00a0four\u00a0weekly\u00a0flights\u00a0to Palembang in Indonesia,\u00a0strengthening\u00a0Changi\u2019s\u00a0connectivity\u00a0in\u00a0Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Jetstar Airways launched new routes to Australia, with\u00a0three\u00a0weekly flights to Sunshine Coast and\u00a0four\u00a0weekly flights\u00a0to Newcastle\u00a0(both via Bali),\u00a0bringing\u00a0Changi Airport\u2019s\u00a0links to Australia to a record nine cities.<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0air\u00a0cargo\u00a0front, Changi Airport welcomed Qantas Freight as a new freighter operator\u00a0earlier this month,\u00a0with twice-weekly Sydney\u2013Shanghai\u2013Singapore\u2013Sydney services.
