\u201cThere was definitely a phase where I wasn\u2019t the most pleasant child to deal with,\u201d said Lin, before chuckling and passing the baton to her mother to share more about that period of their lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think for a first-time parent of a child who\u2019s growing up, it was very tough for us. She was an ideal model child. We would give them iPad time once a week for just half an hour, and at half an hour, when the timer was up, she would [voluntarily] hand the iPad back. She would not argue, there would be no complaints from her,\u201d recalled Tan.<\/p>\n
So, when Lin entered her more defiant years \u2013 or as Tan put it, \u201cwanted to go autonomous\u201d \u2013 both she and Darren Lim were completely caught off guard.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a real 180-degree flip. There were times when she was really testy \u2013 she would go under the radar, above the radar, you know, everywhere else but in front of us,\u201d added Tan.<\/p>\n
When prompted by the host to share a specific example, Lin didn\u2019t hesitate: \u201cDefinitely curfew.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we\u2019re teenagers and when we\u2019re hanging out with our friends, it always extends way longer than we think it will. Sometimes, I don\u2019t have the habit of texting my parents to let them know, like \u2018Hey I\u2019m still safe\u2019, or at least give them an update of my whereabouts,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tan shared that she and Darren Lim initially set an 11pm curfew, but eventually relaxed it, asking only that Lin keep them updated \u2013 which, she admitted, \u201cshe didn\u2019t even do it\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was when it really got to us. It came to a point where we told her \u2018If you don\u2019t want to listen to us, maybe just get out of the house\u2019,\u201d said Tan with a laugh.<\/p>\n
Lin then cheekily admitted that she didn\u2019t want to, especially \u201cnot in this economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
