{"id":45045,"date":"2026-04-17T02:18:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=45045"},"modified":"2026-04-17T02:18:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:18:12","slug":"blink-and-youll-miss-it-rare-mousedeer-spotted-at-pasir-ris-park-at-3am","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=45045","title":{"rendered":"Blink and you\u2019ll miss it: Rare mousedeer spotted at Pasir Ris Park at 3am"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A rare sighting at Pasir Ris Park left one Stomper excited \u2014 and a little amazed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Stomper <strong class=\"font-primary\">Lakshmi <\/strong>said she spotted a mousedeer on April 14 at about 3am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a living fossil species and quite rare,\u201d she told Stomp. \u201cI thought it would be a cool thing for Singaporeans to know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She added that it was her first time seeing one in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She shared a video showing the animal sprinting away from her as she calls out, \u201cHello!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The Stomper had likely spotted a lesser mousedeer, one of the world\u2019s smallest known hoofed animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to the <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nparks.gov.sg\/publications-resources\/articles\/o-deer\" target=\"_blank\">National Parks Board<\/a> (NParks), the native species is usually found in the mature forests of the Central Catchment and Bukit Timah Nature Reserves. While largely solitary, it can be spotted in pairs. It feeds on leaves, shoots, fungi and fallen fruit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">While there were fewer than 50 lesser mousedeer in Singapore in the 1990s, there are now about 160 to 200 thanks to intensive reforestation and habitat enhancement efforts under the NParks Nature Conservation Masterplan, as well as increased support from the scientific and nature community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Previously classified as critically endangered in Singapore, it is now listed as endangered locally.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-xl rounded-xl border border-primary-100 mt-xl\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/assets\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
