{"id":44903,"date":"2026-04-16T13:58:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T05:58:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=44903"},"modified":"2026-04-16T13:58:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T05:58:42","slug":"could-fit-a-9-storey-building-singapore-can-explore-more-underground-spaces-for-fuel-reserves-says-tan-see-leng-singapore-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=44903","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Could fit a 9-storey building&#8217;: Singapore can explore more underground spaces for fuel reserves, says Tan See Leng, Singapore News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Singapore has the experience to explore more underground spaces and grow its fuel reserves, said Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science and Technology Tan See Leng.<\/p>\n<p>In a Facebook post on Tuesday (April 14), Dr Tan spoke about his visit to JTC&#8217;s Jurong Rock Caverns on Monday, and how Singapore is working to safeguard Singapore&#8217;s energy resilience.<\/p>\n<p>The caverns are Southeast Asia&#8217;s first commercial underground oil storage facility, and can store crude oil or compatible products to increase storage capacity for local refineries.<\/p>\n<p>Located 150 metres below Jurong Island, the facility comprises five caverns and a storage capacity equivalent to around nine million barrels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You could fit a nine-storey building here,&#8221; Dr Tan said, labelling the facility as an &#8220;engineering feat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"476\" width=\"267\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F950405851044855%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\">\u00a0<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The caverns have been in operation for over a decade and represent Singapore&#8217;s &#8220;foresight to plan long-term&#8221;, said Dr Tan, adding that Singapore now has the experience to explore even more underground spaces as options to increase fuel reserves.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to boosting fuel reserves, Singapore is continuing to deepen cooperation with like-minded partners such as Australia to strengthen and safeguard Singapore&#8217;s energy resilience, he said.<\/p>\n<p>At a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/singapore\/australia-refined-fuels-lng-supply-anthony-albanese-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press conference on April 10<\/a>, the two nations committed to maintaining the flow of essential goods \u2014 including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and refined petroleum products \u2014 between the countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Middle East situation has disrupted energy supply chains and elevated fuel prices are expected to persist, even if hostilities cease,&#8221; Dr Tan wrote in his Facebook post, noting that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also convened the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/singapore\/lawrence-wong-middle-east-war-energy-crisis-households-businesses-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homefront Crisis Ministerial Committee<\/a> to secure supplies, strengthen economic resilience, and provide targeted help for those most affected.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing also made a separate Facebook post on the same day about his visit to the Jurong Rock Caverns, emphasising the importance of planning ahead in event of global uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeing first-hand how disruptions to energy and supply chains can happen anytime,&#8221;
