Choices are rather limited, so it’s nice that Xiaomi still has that option via its base Xiaomi 17.

Unlike other brands, where non-Ultra flagship phones tend to receive nerfed components, Xiaomi’s approach is to include everything, but in a smaller, sleeker form.

In general, compact phones already trade screen and battery size in favour of lighter builds with slimmer camera bumps. Xiaomi 17 doesn’t cheap out by including flagship components like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and UFS 4.1 storage.

Just like the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Xiaomi has decided that the upgrades to this phone are enough to justify a S$150 price increase, bringing the 512GB version to S$1,249.

Let’s see if it holds up as a top choice for compact phone lovers.

An even smaller display, but still high quality

In a rare move, Xiaomi has made the screen slightly smaller to 6.3 inches. We think that’s smart, since people who buy this phone likely want a small device and are willing to sacrifice larger displays or batteries in favour of compact carry.

The 191g weight is ideal for one-handed use, and it slides perfectly into most pockets without pulling down your pants, unlike most flagship phones. It is, however, about 24g heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S26, its closest 2026 rival.

Smaller, but brighter.

Photo: HWZ

The screen itself was improved with 3,500-nit peak brightness and 2,160Hz PWM dimming. We expect nothing less, too.

Refined software

The phone runs on Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3, and since we’ve already covered most of the important details in our Xiaomi 17 Ultra review, we’ll briefly go over our thoughts on the software and head straight to the cameras.

The overall UI experience felt fluid and intuitive. It looks more compact than its large, all-black square from last year, which adds to Xiaomi 17’s lightweight feel.

The main and ultrawide cameras are updated, but they’re actually similar to its predecessor:

50MP wide main camera (f/1.67 aperture, Light Fusion 950 image sensor, OIS, 1/1.31-inch sensor, 23mm equivalent focal length)

50MP 60mm floating telephoto camera (f/2.0, OIS, 60mm equivalent focal length)

50MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.4, 14mm equivalent focal length, 115° FOV)

Like its predecessor and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, it has two compulsory colour presets if you’re shooting in the native camera app: Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant. Most of our sample shots are taken in Leica Vibrant.

Disclaimer: Photo samples below are taken from the phone’s camera, with file sizes downsampled to reduce bandwidth demand. No other edits were made.

Please do not reproduce the images without permission from SPH Media Limited.

Photos taken with the main camera are generally excellent, with good detail and colours that pop. The phone’s Leica Vibrant mode also tends to overexpose images ever so slightly. If you’re looking for photos that more accurately reflect real-life light levels, we recommend setting the EV (exposure) a little lower (-0.7 worked for us).

Once the telephoto lens comes into play, you’ll notice a slight change in the shots, particularly in low-light situations. Colours get slightly more saturated, and you’re able to get a different, grittier mood.

This does mean that you don’t get consistent colours across the different focal lengths. Photographers who are picky about getting accurate shots might need to put in some editing work to get their preferred style.

However, there’s no such colour consistency issue when switching between the normal and ultrawide cameras. Additionally, the ultrawide camera handles distortion very well.

Benchmark Performance

The Xiaomi 17 uses the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. This makes it easier for us to benchmark against other flagship devices, since most of the highest-end phones released in 2026 will use this chip as well.

We’ll also compare it to other phones in the S$1,200 price range, regardless of whether those phones bill themselves as “flagship” or not. Money’s hard to earn, y’know.

The details on how we benchmark Android phones can be found here.

Thanks to its extremely competent processor, the Xiaomi 17 punches well above its weight. That gives the Xiaomi 17 a large advantage. Your alternatives really only stop at the Samsung Galaxy S26. Technically, the Google Pixel 10 also fits the flagship ~6.3-inch bill, but that option quickly falls through when you look at the phone’s performance.

The lack of competition also emboldened Xiaomi to increase the price to S$1,249. Also, being smaller doesn’t mean it needs to be worse, having brought in the 512GB model replete with all the high-end parts we’ve covered above. The blow to pricing is softened by Samsung’s respective price increase for the Galaxy S26. That smartphone, in fact, is even more expensive at S$1,438 for only 256GB of storage. Xiaomi also addressed the Xiaomi 17’s higher starting price by bringing in a cheaper 256GB variant at S$1,149.

When you look at its Leica-tuned cameras, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, the huge battery (with high uptimes), and super-fast charging speeds, the Xiaomi 17 ends up looking like the best compact option available right now. Hence, we think it remains as one of the best options for compact phone lovers who still want true flagship performance and experience.

There’s always room to improve, though, and we’d love to see Xiaomi include an autofocus module in the ultrawide camera next year, along with upgrading the telephoto lens to a 3x optical zoom option or more.

Xiaomi 17 pricing and availability

Xiaomi 17’s price increase feels justified, but only because good flagship compact phones are getting scarce.

Photo: HWZ

The Xiaomi 17 officially retails at S$1,249 (12GB RAM and 512GB storage) in the Black, Alpine Pink, Ice Blue and Venture Green colourways on Xiaomi’s official online store and official platforms like Shopee and Lazada.

Article Jumplist 1.
