\u201cBecause once you actually live in it, \u2018maybe three kids\u2019 quietly becomes \u2018two is enough.\u2019\u00a0And then we act surprised when TFR (total fertility rate) keeps falling,\u201d he added in the caption.<\/p>\n
Singapore\u2019s TFR fell to a historic low of 0.87 in 2025, down from 0.97 in 2023 and 2024. Only 26,201 citizen births were recorded last year.<\/p>\n
Prab pointed to typical four-room and five-room flat layouts, which come with three bedrooms. While additional rooms can sometimes be carved out, he argued that space runs tight when real-life needs are factored in.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want to make an already tight house even tighter?\u201d he asked. \u201cSo <\/strong>really, three bedrooms. One for you, two for the kids, theoretically.\u201d<\/p>\nHe added that while young children can share rooms, this becomes harder as they grow older, especially when considering other needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat about a helper? Where\u2019s the space for toys, storage, hobbies\u2026 and just having breathing room?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
He also highlighted how lifestyle changes have shifted expectations, with more people working from home and needing privacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not like our parents. We work a lot from home. We need our privacy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For some couples, he suggested, these constraints directly affect decisions about having more children.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo many people ask me, why not have the third kid? Where do I put them?\u201d he said, adding that by the time he can afford a larger home, he \u201cmight not have the energy or time or even the sperm count\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is exactly why old big flats keep breaking records, even with lease decay,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
