{"id":44438,"date":"2026-04-14T18:50:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T10:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=44438"},"modified":"2026-04-14T18:50:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T10:50:35","slug":"rethinking-work-and-support-for-singapores-longevity-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=44438","title":{"rendered":"Rethinking work and support for Singapore&#8217;s \u2018longevity\u2019 society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->As more people live longer \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/theyre-100-and-full-of-life-super-seniors-defy-expectations-at-active-ageing-centres?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">even beyond the age of 100<\/span><\/a> \u2013 Singapore must rethink how it organises work, communities and support systems to help individuals navigate multiple transitions in life, said Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, on April 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Fresh ideas are needed as Singapore moves to redesign societies, allowing people to remain active, purposeful and connected throughout longer lives, she added.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe need to prepare for a \u2018longevity\u2019 society, not an ageing population,\u201d said Ms Indranee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThis means that the traditional three-stage model of education, work and retirement may no longer hold. Instead, life may involve multiple phases of learning, working, caregiving and contribution.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For example, a person may step away from work to care for young children or ageing parents and later return to the workforce, she added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Indranee, who is also Second Minister for Finance and National Development, was speaking at the World Ageing Festival, where she officiated the launch of the Singapore Management University (SMU) Longevity Societies and Economies Institute (LSEI).<!-- -->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The institute studies ageing through economic and societal lenses, with a focus on translating research in areas such as workforce transformation, retirement systems and financial security to help Singapore harness the opportunities of longevity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Republic has taken important steps to prepare for an ageing society, but there is more to be done as its demographics continue to change, said Ms Indranee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Today, it is home to about 1,800 centenarians, up from about 700 in 2010. Currently, one in about five Singaporeans are aged 65 and above. By 2030, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/singapores-population-ageing-rapidly-184-of-citizens-are-65-years-and-older?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">will rise to one in four<\/span><\/a>. In about 15 years, about one in every three seniors will be 80 or older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At SMU, the Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA) has undertaken research on how individuals can age well. It will go one step further by examining how entire societies must evolve as people live much longer lives, shifting the focus from ageing as a life stage to longevity as a structural transformation that will profoundly reshape societies and provide opportunities for all, said Ms Indranee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For instance, LSEI\u2019s research showed that while both men and women tend to be more socially active after retirement, retired men may be more at risk of feeling a reduced sense of meaningful contribution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSuch insights highlight opportunities for targeted policy and community interventions,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As the<!-- --> institute<!-- --> develops, there will be scope to explore new business and financing models, strengthen regulatory frameworks and address governance considerations such as privacy, cybersecurity and societal acceptance, she added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">LSEI has established partnerships with five stakeholders in the government, community and private sectors \u2013 the Agency for Integrated Care, Workforce Singapore, Lions Befrienders, St Luke\u2019s Eldercare and Singlife to conduct joint research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While Singapore has traditionally been very youth-oriented, rising<!-- --> <!-- -->life expectancy and lower birth rates are fast reshaping labour supply, healthcare demand, retirement planning and community support frameworks.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Professor Paulin Straughan, director of ROSA and interim co-director of LSEI, said Singapore faces the question of how to harness the opportunities of longevity, especially with more seniors ageing well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSurely, we don\u2019t want them to be rendered invisible&#8230;
