He switched from taking the bus to walking about a year ago after repeated delays caused by traffic jams and crowded buses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Although he is aware of the risks, he said he is forced to do so to save time and avoid being late for his 8am shift in Woodlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cIf the number of buses could be increased, I wouldn\u2019t choose to take the risk, but there\u2019s really no other way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Another commuter, Lan Zi Xin (transliterated), 31, said he usually takes the bus and only walks during special circumstances such as long weekends when traffic is heavier. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He added that he hopes a proper pedestrian walkway could be introduced in future, especially with the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link set to begin operations in 2027, after which<a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/jb-woodlands-train-to-end-service-in-2027-within-6-months-after-rts-link-begins-operations\" target=\"_blank\"> the Shuttle Tebrau train service will cease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Traffic signs are not new<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to past reports, pedestrians have long been prohibited from using the Causeway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZXrelv2UiBs\" target=\"_blank\">2018 video on CNA<\/a> showed signage at the start of the Johor-Singapore Causeway stating that pedestrians are not allowed. \u201cAny accidents are your own responsibility,\u201d the notice read in Malay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zaobao.com.sg\/news\/singapore\/story20260412-8880569\" target=\"_blank\">Shin Min Daily News<\/a>, Andrew Chen Kah Eng, the Stulang state assemblyman, said walking on the Causeway has always been prohibited, though the law has not been strictly enforced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He added that the recently installed signs are likely replacements designed to be more visible, rather than a new measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">While acknowledging the longstanding congestion issues, he noted that the lack of strict enforcement has led some commuters to continue walking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Mr Chen said he has been advocating for a designated pedestrian walkway to provide a safer alternative for commuters to cross the border. However, past proposals \u2014 including a covered walkway \u2014 have yet to make progress.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">\u2018Walk at your own risk\u2019: Some netizens agree pedestrians shouldn\u2019t walk on Causeway<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A Facebook post sharing <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/malaysia.singapore.border.crossers\/posts\/3824014284402416\/\" target=\"_blank\">pictures of the signs along the Causeway<\/a> captioned \u201cLatest news!!! What the F, we can\u2019t walk?\u201d has garnered more than 210 reactions and 120 comments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Some pointed out that the Causeway is a highway, and that pedestrians have been disregarding the law for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cHighway you can walk? F your head la,\u201d one Facebook user commented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Another added: \u201cYou have been walking illegally for many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Others warned of the risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cWalk at your own risk.
