{"id":43959,"date":"2026-04-12T22:19:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T14:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=43959"},"modified":"2026-04-12T22:19:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T14:19:44","slug":"wp-chief-pritam-singh-seen-at-walkabout-week-after-disciplinary-panel-says-probe-complete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=43959","title":{"rendered":"WP chief Pritam Singh seen at walkabout week after disciplinary panel says probe complete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; <!-- -->In the first weekend walkabout since the Workers\u2019 Party announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/wp-disciplinary-panel-completes-investigations-into-party-chief-pritam-singh?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">completion of its disciplinary probe into party chief Pritam Singh<\/span><\/a>, WP MPs and members greeted residents at Fengshan Centre with Mr Singh on the morning of April 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dressed in party blues, the group of about 40 fanned out across the busy hawker centre and market in East Coast GRC, shaking hands with those having their breakfast and doing their shopping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Speculation has been mounting about Mr Singh\u2019s fate since the party said on April 4 that a disciplinary panel looking into whether he had contravened WP\u2019s Constitution after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/pritam-singh-disappointed-by-appeal-loss-but-respects-and-accepts-judgment-fully-without-reservation?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">convicted for lying to a parliamentary committee<\/span><\/a> had completed its work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/wp-disciplinary-panel-on-pritam-singh-comprises-mps-he-ting-ru-jamus-lim-former-mp-png-eng-huat?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">The panel<\/span><\/a>, comprising WP Sengkang GRC MPs He Ting Ru and Jamus Lim, as well as former Hougang MP Png Eng Huat, has to present its final report and recommendations to the party\u2019s central executive committee (CEC) in April. All three were not present on April 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When approached by The Straits Times at the walkabout, Mr Singh declined to comment on the disciplinary process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">WP chairwoman Sylvia Lim said the party would provide updates when they were available. She declined to comment further on the party\u2019s next steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Also present were WP MPs Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, Dennis Tan, Fadli Fawzi, Gerald Giam and Kenneth Tiong, as well as Non-Constituency MP Eileen Chong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The outcome of the findings could have a bearing on Mr Singh\u2019s political future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The findings and recommendations are likely to be put to the party\u2019s CEC \u2013 its top decision-making body \u2013 for a vote, if past disciplinary proceedings are any indication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2021, after then Sengkang GRC MP Raeesah Khan lied in Parliament about an anecdote on how the police had treated a sexual assault victim, the CEC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/wp-cec-voted-to-expel-raeesah-khan-over-parliament-lie-without-full-facts?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">voted for her expulsion if she did not resign<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2012, the CEC had voted to dismiss its then Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong after he did not respond to the party\u2019s questions about alleged personal indiscretions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The disciplinary panel looking into Mr Singh was set up by the CEC in January and came a month after the High Court upheld Mr Singh\u2019s conviction for lying to Parliament\u2019s Committee of Privileges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The court found that Mr Singh had guided Ms Khan to maintain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/wp-chief-pritam-singh-charged-timeline-of-events-in-raeesah-khan-lying-probe?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">the lie she told in Parliament<\/span><\/a>, and that he lied to the Committee of Privileges about asking her to come clean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When the formation of the disciplinary panel was announced on Jan 3, WP said the CEC had set a timeline that the disciplinary process be concluded within three months, to prevent undue delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As part of the probe, the party invited its members to give their views on the matter. While the party did not disclose the terms of reference for the disciplinary panel, party members who attended feedback sessions said the panel had asked about whether Mr Singh had contravened Article 30 of the party Constitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The article states that party members nominated as candidates for election must \u201ccomply with party discipline in major decisions of policy, and to be honest and frank in all his dealings with the party and the people of Singapore\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore Management University associate professor <!-- -->of<!-- --> law Eugene Tan said that if the panel concludes Mr Singh had contravened the party\u2019s Constitution, \u201cthen the natural implication is that there must be some disciplinary measure imposed on (him)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe question then is whether the CEC will impose merely a slap on the wrist, or will they pursue the option of demanding Singh\u2019s resignation as a member,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On the other hand, if the panel finds that Mr Singh is not in contravention of the Constitution, then he is likely to remain a WP MP and even as party leader, said Institute of Policy Studies Social Lab adjunct principal research fellow and academic adviser Tan Ern Ser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Citing how the WP MPs had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/parliament-deems-pritam-singh-unsuitable-to-continue-as-leader-of-the-opposition?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">voted against a parliamentary motion in January<\/span><\/a> to deem Mr Singh unsuitable as Leader of the Opposition, Dr Tan said: \u201c(That) suggests to me that the party leaders may deem his conviction and sentence by the court is \u2018punishment\u2019 enough, and any further punitive action would seem like a case of \u2018double jeopardy\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But he added that the issue is not whether he is punished repeatedly for the same offence, but whether the offence \u201creflects a character flaw inconsistent with that expected of an elected official, even if not legally disqualifying to serve as an MP\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Singh was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/no-longer-tenable-for-him-to-continue-as-the-lo-pm-wong-removes-pritam-singh-from-post?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">removed as Leader of the Opposition<\/span><\/a> by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong a day after Parliament backed the motion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Other than the CEC vote, Mr Singh will have to contend with a special members\u2019 conference called by a group of 20 or so long-time cadres who planned to move a vote of no-confidence against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The cadres wrote to the CEC in December 2025.
