Highway To Somewhere screenwriter Ang Eng Tee told Shin Min Daily News that the storyline was inspired by reports of scam syndicates targeting both Singaporeans and Malaysians.<\/p>\n
“My hope is for this drama to serve as a reminder that scams are becoming more and more rampant, and everyone must be cautious no matter which country you travel to,” he said, adding that Malaysia was chosen for its popularity among Singaporean travellers and its suitability for a road trip setting.<\/p>\n
“We filmed Malaysia beautifully, and never had the intention to portray the country as a scam centre.”<\/p>\n
Ang also told CNA Lifestyle that in the show, “the mastermind behind the scam is portrayed as being from overseas, and the syndicate is ultimately brought to justice, and the series makes clear that Malaysia is a country governed by the rule of law where criminal activities are not tolerated.<\/p>\n
