Sign in Grab vehicle says driver will not speak English with Chinese passengers, only Mandarin<\/h2>\n

A passenger recently took issue with a sign in a recent Grab ride urging Chinese passengers to \u201cspeak Mandarin\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The driver will not speak English with Chinese passengers, according to the sign seen in a TikTok video posted on 7 April.<\/p>\n

\u2018Speak Mandarin\u2019 sign displayed behind Grab driver\u2019s seat<\/h3>\n

In the clip, the user known as Ally described her Grab ride as \u201cweird\u201d due to the sign, which was prominently displayed behind the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n

She turned to her husband, who was sitting next to her, and asked him whether he could read the sign, but he said he could not.<\/p>\n

However, he replied in the affirmative when asked whether he was Chinese.<\/p>\n

Woman says husband \u2018got discriminated\u2019 by sign<\/h3>\n

Ally said that her husband, who can\u2019t read Chinese and speaks only basic Mandarin, \u201cgot discriminated\u201d by a sign.<\/p>\n

She explained that he took the simplified Chinese Level (B) till the age of 13, then stopped learning Mandarin when he went overseas to study.<\/p>\n

While he\u2019s now better at conversational Mandarin, he still can\u2019t read much and was \u201csad\u201d when he learnt what the sign said, she added.<\/p>\n

Grab driver only grunted when she spoke to him<\/h3>\n

In a subsequent TikTok video, Ally said the couple had taken the Grab ride the previous Sunday afternoon from Kallang<\/a>.<\/p>\n
