{"id":43612,"date":"2026-04-11T13:23:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T05:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=43612"},"modified":"2026-04-11T13:23:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T05:23:37","slug":"dbs-to-probe-high-risk-fund-transfers-with-more-questions-to-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=43612","title":{"rendered":"DBS to probe high-risk fund transfers with more questions to customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 More DBS online banking users can expect further probes into the nature of their transfers as Singapore\u2019s largest bank rolls out new measures to stamp out scams, most of which involve victims knowingly sending funds<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over the coming months, making high-risk fund transfers may require users to answer questions such as the identity of the person requesting the transfer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These questions, which are still being worked out, will act as \u201ccognitive breaks\u201d to interrupt the psychological state of victims and prompt them to rethink their decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Depending on the user\u2019s response, the bank will intervene accordingly, said Mr Yin Juon Qiang, DBS Bank\u2019s head of group investigations and fraud advisory. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Details of the intervention have not been disclosed, but existing interventions for high-risk transactions include making a call to the customer, and delaying or temporarily blocking the transfer<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More customised in-app prompts will also be activated when customers initiate transactions of higher risk, including adding a new payee and raising transfer limits.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Customised prompts may include \u201cWere you asked to transfer money for an investment?\u201d or \u201cHave you met this recipient in real life?\u201d. Elderly customers may also receive a prompt in larger font and with bolder visuals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These customised prompts will supplement standard ones seen today:<!-- --> <!-- -->\u201cDo you really know the individual or organisation you are adding as a recipient? Could fraudsters be using a new tactic to trick you into sending money? If in doubt, do not proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"default inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/5f6bf15e1ed13eaa106ffd4905b6192131cd12776ffab59357ce505791b140ec?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/5f6bf15e1ed13eaa106ffd4905b6192131cd12776ffab59357ce505791b140ec?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/5f6bf15e1ed13eaa106ffd4905b6192131cd12776ffab59357ce505791b140ec?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/5f6bf15e1ed13eaa106ffd4905b6192131cd12776ffab59357ce505791b140ec\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-default flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover default article-default mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Standardised prompts that currently appear when users change their daily transaction limits, or add a new transfer recipient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM DBS\/POSB APPS<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Such interventions allow the bank to be more targeted, said Mr Yin, noting that it already analyses signals, such as changes in the device used or unusual transaction patterns, to pick out high-risk scenarios from millions of transactions daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about a single static control; it\u2019s about having a system that can adapt dynamically,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The targeted measures complement broad-based controls such as a 12-hour cooling period for adding a new payee or registering a digital token. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Banks are also required to send real-time alerts when customers increase daily transfer limits, update their contact details and register a digital token.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These broad-based measures were mandated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/consumer\/ocbc-cautions-public-about-sms-phishing-scams-after-customers-lose-140000-in-10-days?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a major phishing scam in late 2021<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/sms-scams-savings-wiped-out-in-a-few-minutes-from-ocbc-accounts?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">early 2022<\/span><\/a> that targeted OCBC Bank customers. Government official impersonation and love scams can fall under this category. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Unauthorised scams involve scammers gaining illegal access to a victim\u2019s bank account after stealing login credentials via phishing links.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Authorised scams made up 81.8 per cent of all scam cases that Singapore saw in 2025, according to statistics released by the police in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAs such, a significant focus is placed on combating authorised scams, which are more complex to detect and successfully intervene.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The number of scam cases in Singapore has fallen for the first time in eight years, from more than 50,000 in 2024 to 37,308 in 2025, according to the police statistics released in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But a concerning scam trend also emerged in 2025, where victims have been convinced to buy gold bars and hand them over to scammers, as these are harder for the authorities to track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Said Mr Yin: \u201cDBS will continue to play our part in both continuing our targeted measures, as well as moving collectively on industry-wide
