{"id":43460,"date":"2026-04-11T02:23:53","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=43460"},"modified":"2026-04-11T02:23:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:23:53","slug":"mandai-wildlife-reserve-welcomes-critically-endangered-orang-utan-baby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=43460","title":{"rendered":"Mandai Wildlife Reserve welcomes critically endangered orang utan baby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Visitors to the Singapore Zoo can now catch a glimpse of a three-week-old orang utan at the wildlife attraction in Mandai Wildlife Reserve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Born on <!-- -->March 23,<!-- --> the Bornean orang utan baby and its mother, Miri, \u201care settling in beautifully\u201d, Mandai Wildlife Reserve said on social media on April 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe have a feeling this is just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Wendy Chua, curator of animal care (operations) at Mandai Wildlife Group, said animal care and veterinary teams had been closely monitoring 33-year-old Miri, following confirmation of her pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shortly after giving birth, mother and baby were guided to a quiet, off\u2011exhibit maternity den, where they had time to rest, bond and adjust, while receiving close care from the zoo\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The pair were returned to the exhibit on April 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMiri has been calm, attentive and protective, keeping her baby close as they gradually settle back into their familiar surroundings,\u201d Ms Chua added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a video posted by Mandai on social media, the auburn-haired baby, a female, can be seen clinging onto Miri as she swings and climbs around the orang utan enclosure at Orangutan Island \u2013 a free-ranging exhibit for the tree-dwelling mammals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The orang utan, seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/east-asia\/baby-monkey-punch-getting-used-to-life-without-stuffed-orang-utan-mother-in-japan-zoo?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a favourite of social media darling Punch, the Japanese macaque<\/span><\/a>, is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This means the animals are at extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There are three known species of orang utan: the Sumatran, Bornean and Tapanuli. The main threats to them include deforestation and hunting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There are around <!-- -->104,700 Bornean<!-- --> orang utan and some <!-- -->14,600<!-- --> Sumatran orang utan in the wild, based on estimates by the World Wide Fund for Nature. The population of Tapanuli orang utan, which has been described as the world\u2019s rarest ape, numbers only around <!-- -->800<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The orang utan \u2013 which translates to \u201cperson of the forest\u201d in Malay \u2013 is the largest tree-dwelling mammal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Female orang utans give birth only <!-- -->once every eight years, the longest time period of any animal<!-- -->, according to the National Geographic. The babies then stay with their mother for around <!-- -->six to seven year<!-- -->s while learning how to survive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The animals can live for <!-- -->up to 60 years<!-- --> under human care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The orang utan infant joins other recent births at Mandai.
