Samsung uses the world’s first 2nm smartphone processor, the Exynos 2600 (made by Samsung). It powers both Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+.

Because these Exynos chips are Samsung’s flagship processors at the time of writing, and are new, we’ll need to compare them against the likes of MediaTek Dimensity 9500 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (more on this below).

Besides boasting one of the most modern mobile processors, the real draw is Samsung’s promise of the same seven years of software and security updates, which is one of the longest in the market.

Refinements for less AI friction

With upgrades like Now Nudge and an updated Now Brief, Samsung is focusing on tweaking its AI features to make them more useful and seamless to use on its phones. We won’t go into too much detail as we’ve carved them out here and tested others in the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra review.

Now Nudge is supposed to be a smart assistant living in the keyboard. It will scan what’s on the screen, then suggest actions in the Samsung Keyboard. In theory, this sounds like a great AI feature that checks whether you’re available at a certain time without opening the calendar app, saving you a step.

However, it doesn’t always work consistently, even when using Samsung Keyboard and Samsung’s native Calendar app. As with many AI tools and features on the market, the technology itself still faces teething issues, even when used for good.

Now Brief has been a simplified one-glance overview companion to check what’s coming up, as well as offering some related practical elements such as weather, audio track recommendations, mapping info for your next meeting location, and more at a glance. Whether it’s useful depends on the individual and one’s expectations. There’s a new “Get richer insights” option, where you can choose to share personal data to get more personalised content in the Now Brief. Unfortunately, those insights were nowhere near the level of help I expected.

For example, connecting my YouTube only pushed videos and shorts from channels I’m already subscribed to. That doesn’t add any more value than checking the app directly or its notifications. I’m also not getting any “travel insights” from Gemini, despite performing a ton of searches for flights to San Francisco and itinerary suggestions.

Beyond that, the other Galaxy AI features are thankfully practical. Document Scan saves you the trouble of downloading or paying for a third-party app to scan your documents or receipts.

Call Screening is another great one, especially if you receive a lot of calls from unknown numbers or if you just don’t like picking up calls without prior context. The call transcription even offers support for multiple languages.

AI photo editing features, such as Generative Edit and Photo Assist, are mostly rebrands and consolidations of Samsung’s older AI photo-editing tools, like Sketch to Image. However, Photo Assist now allows for text prompt editing, which is very helpful for adding things into images.

Before Photo Assist

Photo: HWZ

After Photo Assist

Photo: HWZ

It also works very well at subtracting distractions, like the people crowding in front of the Merlion. Despite this increase in battery capacity, the battery life uptime for the Galaxy S26 didn’t translate to better phone uptime, even though the new model only had a modest 0.1-inch larger screen size. What’s surprising is that the Galaxy S26+ had a big improvement in uptime, despite the battery capacity remaining the same.

Considering the modest performance gains over their predecessors, this suggests the new Exynos processor is more power efficient, while the change in display size on the Galaxy S26 model negated any meaningful uplift.

While Samsung might not seem to be in the forefront for packing a lot of battery capacity, once you do the math, Samsung’s battery uptime efficiency per unit of battery capacity is pretty much in the same ballpark as the other leading phones. If Samsung can find a way to increase its battery capacity while maintaining its power efficiency, it could one day easily outpace its competitors.

On the topic of charging capabilities, the Galaxy S26+ gets the faster 45W charging, while the Galaxy S26 continues to chug along with a 25W wired charging speed. There’s also wireless charging at 15W for the Galaxy S26, while the Galaxy S26+ gets a boosted 20W wireless charging speed, which means it’s Qi2.2 compatible.

In this day and age, where many phone brands offer ultra-high-speed wired charging rates for both their mid- and high-end phones, Samsung continues to lag behind in this department, and this is sorely apparent on the Galaxy S26. The phone took a grand total of 38 minutes to get to 50%, with a full charge in 81 minutes. Going by our reviews database, for most high-end phones with faster charging speeds and higher battery capacities, the average is under 25 minutes to reach 50% and under 1 hour for a full charge.

Fortunately, the Galaxy S26+ was better in this department, with higher charging rates, and only took 25 minutes to get from 0-50%, with a full charge in 61 minutes.

Conclusion

Despite the same-ness, the Galaxy 26+ does look pretty.

Photo: HWZ

Last year, we said it didn’t matter if the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ were boring, as long as they were good. That has changed. Samsung has seen fit to raise prices on these phones with no obvious improvement to their predecessor.

This does a disservice to an otherwise excellent and stable Galaxy S series, because it makes it hard for us to tell people why they should buy a Galaxy S26 or S26+ over the previous models. Yes, this year’s phones are very good, if not one of the best options for flagship phones, but we also have to be prudent and judicious when recommending new and shiny things to people.

The change to Samsung’s own processor did not yield extraordinary gains over established flagship chips like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or the MediaTek Dimensity 9500. This also hurts the two phones’ value proposition when the obvious mass market details like displays, cameras, and battery uptimes are largely similar year-on-year.

Competitors like the Xiaomi 17, Honor Magic8 Pro and OPPO Find X9 Pro offer similar, if not better, performance while being priced more competitively and offering better hardware choices, like more RAM or higher starting storage capacities, or more effort in imaging prowess.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra might be the better buy.

Photo: HWZ

The most optimistic take we can offer is that Samsung wants to push people toward the Galaxy S26 Ultra. We also inferred that from how little attention these two phones got at Samsung’s own Galaxy S keynote, the price increase they got when the Ultra barely had any, and the fact that the headlining features were reserved for Samsung’s favourite child.

A common saying (in the HardwareZone Forums and sometimes here) is that you “top up a bit, can get better”. This is so true with the Galaxy S26 series, because topping up to an Ultra gives you innovation like new Privacy Display, and upgrades like 60W fast charging, better battery life and the Snapdragon processor.

While Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+ buyers would be very satisfied with their devices, it’s hard not to recommend the Ultra variant or other contenders. We hope Samsung won’t march in the same spot when we return for next year’s Galaxy S.

In fact, we don’t really see why anyone should get the Galaxy S26+ when the Ultra is priced very close to it. Last, but not least, if you’re quite set on getting a compact flagship smartphone, there’s really not much choice other than the Galaxy S26.

The Samsung Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+ retail from S$1,438 and S$1,628, respectively, in Cobalt Violet, Sky Blue, Black, and White.
