Japan<\/span>\u2019s famed cherry blossom season has become the latest battleground in a broader debate over overtourism, etiquette and how foreign visitors are portrayed when trouble flares.<\/div>\n

That debate sharpened this week after the conservative Sankei newspaper ran a report accusing \u201cunruly crowds\u201d of foreigners of misbehaving during hanami<\/em> \u2013 or cherry blossom viewing parties \u2013 across Japan, prompting renewed calls for visitors to show greater respect for local customs.<\/p>\n

In an echo of wider demands to rein in foreign tourists, Sunday\u2019s edition of the paper carried a story under the headline: \u201cSinging and dancing during \u2018explosive cherry blossom viewing\u2019 can lead to tourism pollution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The article said noise, \u201cdangerous rule-breaking\u201d and overtourism were \u201cpushing residents to the limit\u201d.<\/p>\n

To support its claim, the report said residents of Dazaifu, in Fukuoka prefecture, had complained about groups \u201cmaking a racket in Chinese\u201d at a popular hanami<\/em> spot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
