{"id":42149,"date":"2026-04-06T13:19:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T05:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=42149"},"modified":"2026-04-06T13:19:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T05:19:37","slug":"pig-blood-products-to-return-to-singapore-after-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=42149","title":{"rendered":"Pig blood products to return to Singapore after ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> After <!-- -->more than<!-- --> 27 years, pig blood products will soon be available to consumers in Singapore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a circular on April 1, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it had approved the import of heat-treated pork blood products from Thailand\u2019s Bangkhla Pig Slaughterhouse after food safety assessments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The slaughterhouse is the first and only official import application SFA has received since new requirements were established, the agency said on April 3, in response to queries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its circular, t<!-- -->he agency said each consignment must be accompanied by an official health certificate issued by Thailand\u2019s Department of Livestock Development to certify that the import complies with animal health and food safety requirements in Singapore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cTraders are reminded that pork and pork products can be imported only from SFA-approved sources,\u201d SFA added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Animal blood food products, including pig blood and duck blood, had been prohibited in Singapore since the 1999 Nipah virus outbreak that killed an abattoir worker in the Republic. The outbreak also affected pig farmers in Malaysia, and resulted in more than 100 deaths there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Nipah is a zoonotic virus, which means it can spread from animals to humans. It can also spread directly between humans or through contaminated food.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/woman-fined-8000-for-possessing-selling-illegally-imported-pig-s-blood-curd?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a woman was fined $8,000<\/span><\/a> for the possession and sale of illegally imported pig blood curd. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SFA told The Straits Times there had been periodic interest since 1999 from industry stakeholders to resume pig blood product supply through imports. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The agency conducted a risk assessment in 2018 and established requirements for the safe collection and processing of blood for food purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSFA has assessed that the Thai establishment\u2019s facilities, processes, and quality control systems meet our food safety requirements,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThis includes adherence to protocols for blood collection, processing, and storage, as well as ensuring that only blood from healthy animals is used, hygienic collection procedures and appropriate processing temperatures and methods,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a media statement on April 2, CP Foods, which will import the products from Thailand, said it will be another one to two months before they will be available in Singapore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe pig\u2019s blood undergoes high-temperature treatment and pasteurisation, and the packaging is similar to the boxed tofu commonly found in Singapore,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/46f027acffcbc154e426bd138cd4bfb2de8744dc8475f85417e76b72a9b3a382?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/46f027acffcbc154e426bd138cd4bfb2de8744dc8475f85417e76b72a9b3a382?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/46f027acffcbc154e426bd138cd4bfb2de8744dc8475f85417e76b72a9b3a382?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/46f027acffcbc154e426bd138cd4bfb2de8744dc8475f85417e76b72a9b3a382\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">CP Foods, which will import the products from Thailand, said it will be another one to two months before they will be available in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: CP FOODS<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When contacted, veteran food critic K.F. Seetoh said he welcomes the news \u201cbecause some dishes can now go back to being authentic\u201d. He cited the examples of Teochew-style pig organ soup \u2013 also known as ter huang kiam chye \u2013 as well as curry noodles and yong tau foo<i>. <\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThose CP blood curds are well made.
