Chang\u2019s own novellas were often considered difficult to adapt for the screen.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cHer stories are beautiful because of their language and details, not their plots,\u201d critic Paul Fonoroff wrote in the South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Nevertheless, the great Hong Kong director <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Ann Hui On-wah<\/span> has tried three times, with <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Love in a Fallen City<\/em> (1984), <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Eighteen Springs<\/em> (1997) and <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Love After Love<\/em><\/span> (2020). Here, we take a look at her first two Chang adaptations.<\/div>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">Love in a Fallen City (1984)<\/h3>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">This beautifully wrought version of Chang\u2019s 1943 novella features <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Chow Yun-fat<\/span> as a playboy and Cora Miao Chien-jen as the demure Shanghainese woman he falls in love with.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Hui constantly sought to experiment during her early career \u2013 later helming the martial arts epic <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">The Romance of Book and Sword<\/em><\/span>, for instance \u2013 and this adaptation marks a significant departure in visual style from her preceding films, including <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">The Secret<\/em><\/span> and the acclaimed <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Boat People<\/em><\/span>.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Hui tends to adapt her directorial approach to the needs of the script. <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Love in a Fallen City<\/em> relies on wide shots, slow pans and a consistently genteel approach to depict the upper echelons of life in Shanghai, achieving a careful sophistication rare for 1980s Hong Kong cinema.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This is perfectly captured in a garden party scene where Hui\u2019s smoothly sweeping camera eavesdrops on wealthy guests, mimicking Luchino Visconti\u2019s <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">The Leopard<\/em> on a smaller scale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/entertainment\/article\/3348750\/how-did-ann-hui-bring-eileen-changs-love-fallen-city-and-eighteen-springs-life?utm_source=rss_feed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article At Source <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrated novelist Eileen Chang Ai-ling was not only a film fan, but she also worked as a film critic and wrote movie scripts.
