Over 450 years, these exchanges led to the development of the kingdom\u2019s unique culture.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Ryukyu<\/span> was also a tributary state of the Chinese <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Ming<\/span> and <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Qing<\/span> dynasties. But despite these links to China, it remained a distinct entity with its own language until Japan annexed it in 1879.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">\u201cEven during Japan\u2019s Sakoku isolationist period [during the Edo period, when the government drastically restricted foreign trade and the movement of people in and out of the country], <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Okinawa<\/span> maintained trade and cultural exchange with other places,\u201d says Yoshiko Iha, the owner of Shuri Tunda Dining, a restaurant dedicated to recreating the Ryukyu Kingdom\u2019s court cuisine for the general public.<\/div>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"methode-html-wrapper
