She struggled to breathe, cried constantly, and cancelled gatherings with friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Seeing her husband of 50 years \u2013 a former operations manager at a petrol company and avid football player \u2013 lose his ability to walk added to her grief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cUntil today, I still feel very sorry for him. Why is he like that? That\u2019s why I find ways and means to nurse him better,\u201d said Madam Ong, tearing up in an interview with The Straits Times.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"portrait inline-media-wrapper\" style=\"--aspect-article-portrait:1140 \/ 1521\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/92ad562eae5a8fa30a4bc6e657d10f93a80703ed54b43f89c74fe743d6bee107?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/92ad562eae5a8fa30a4bc6e657d10f93a80703ed54b43f89c74fe743d6bee107?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/92ad562eae5a8fa30a4bc6e657d10f93a80703ed54b43f89c74fe743d6bee107?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/92ad562eae5a8fa30a4bc6e657d10f93a80703ed54b43f89c74fe743d6bee107\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-portrait flex items-start shrink-0 portrait article-portrait object-contain mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Madam Helene Ong and her husband David Tan, grandparents of six, have been married for 50 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: COURTESY OF MADAM HELENE ONG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/beyond-family-how-spore-can-meet-the-needs-of-its-super-aged-era?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">needs of caregivers for seniors in Singapore have grown<\/span><\/a> with an ageing population, with many now being older adults themselves, like Madam Ong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She received support in November 2025 from TOUCH Community Services\u2019 caregiver support group after she took her husband to its active ageing centre TOUCHpoint@AMK 433 at Ang Mo Kio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">TOUCH Community Services\u2019 latest initiative, Carer TORCH, received a recent boost in funding from the Income OrangeAid Caregiver Support Accelerator Grant, so it can support over 300 caregivers \u2013 up from about 40 caregivers it currently serves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Carer TORCH was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/community\/who-cares-for-caregivers-10-agencies-get-new-grant-to-expand-support-respite-care-in-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">10 proposals awarded the grant on March 10,<\/span><\/a> which supports caregiver-focused initiatives from social service agencies, such as support groups and respite care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Each agency will be given up to $500,000 over three years to fund a long-term programme for caregivers \u2013 a much-needed boost as there is currently not much funding for such initiatives, said grantees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Hearing stories from fellow caregivers helped Madam Ong feel she was not alone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/significant-share-of-caregivers-to-elderly-face-health-woes-themselves-duke-nus-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">A 2023 Duke-NUS study<\/span><\/a> found that the average age of caregivers to older adults aged 75 and above was 62 years old. Researchers said these caregivers\u2019 health issues may make them more vulnerable to the challenges and stresses that come with caregiving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Madam Ong stayed by Mr Tan\u2019s hospital bedside daily when he was in a coma after his stroke, singing his favourite tunes from pop singer Tom Jones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When he returned home, her days were a blur of preparing nutritious meals for him and driving him to doctors\u2019 and physiotherapy appointments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One of their two sons hired a domestic helper for them, but Madam Ong, a former secretary, said it was also stressful to guide the helper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMy time is more for him, (he was the) priority&#8230; it reached a stage where I did go through depression,\u201d said Madam Ong, though she was never formally diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She dreaded going home, and remembered days weeping in church while worried friends surrounded her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Caregivers are individuals with their own needs, which they may forget when their life revolves around caring for their loved ones, said Ms June Sim, who heads TOUCH Community Services\u2019 Caregivers Support Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When she asks caregivers about their favourite food, some simply answer: \u201cAnything my loved ones eat, I eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Carer TORCH will support caregivers through one-to-one coaching and structured group sessions.
