{"id":41949,"date":"2026-04-05T17:02:34","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T09:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=41949"},"modified":"2026-04-05T17:02:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T09:02:34","slug":"hong-kong-bar-maestro-jay-khan-swaps-cocktails-for-cameras-for-his-first-photo-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=41949","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong bar maestro Jay Khan swaps cocktails for cameras for his first photo exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.i-scmp.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1280x720\/public\/d8\/images\/canvas\/2026\/04\/02\/55fc5566-58c2-4b16-b8f5-7d22a29ce55d_a6382f7f.jpg?itok=SrDerAEX&amp;v=1775100515\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">As the force behind two of Hong Kong\u2019s most revered craft cocktail bars \u2013 Coa and The Savory Project \u2013 Jay Khan is kept busy enough with his day, or rather, night job and is perhaps one of the last people you would expect to get a side gig.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">However, as a self-described \u201cvery restless person\u201d, he got one anyway.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In March, less than six years after buying his first camera in 2020, he unveiled his first-ever photography exhibition, \u201cPouring Shadow\u201d, at Sin Sin Fine Art, an independent gallery in Hong Kong\u2019s Wong Chuk Hang neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Running until May 20, the aptly named exhibition shows how <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">the award-winning bartender<\/span> has transferred his creative sensibility from behind the bar to behind the lens in a showcase of 21 black-and-white photographic prints.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The 40-year-old has spent about two decades in Hong Kong\u2019s bar scene. In 2017, he opened the Mexican-inspired bar Coa, which <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">ranked No 1 on the Asia\u2019s 50 Best Bars list<\/span> for three consecutive years from 2021. In 2023, he co-founded The Savory Project in SoHo, which was named best new opening in the 2024 Asia\u2019s 50 Best Bars awards.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">What few people know is that his interest in photography started before he launched these popular cocktail joints.
