{"id":41874,"date":"2026-04-05T09:14:39","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T01:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=41874"},"modified":"2026-04-05T09:14:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T01:14:39","slug":"why-home-grown-fb-firms-like-yeos-tiger-leave-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=41874","title":{"rendered":"Why home-grown F&#038;B firms like Yeo&#8217;s, Tiger leave Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Larger-scale manufacturers with overseas markets are more likely to move operations out, say observers<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" data-testid=\"article-body-container\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[SINGAPORE] The recent moves by two home-grown food and beverage (F&amp;B) firms to downsize their Singapore operations and shift parts of their manufacturing overseas raise questions about whether others might follow.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Tiger Beer maker Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore (APBS) said on Mar 24 that it would <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/singapore\/tiger-beer-brewed-vietnam-still-singaporean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phase down large-scale brewing operations<\/a> in Singapore and move them to Malaysia and Vietnam. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">A week later, on Mar 31, beverage brand <!-- --> <!-- -->Yeo Hiap Seng<!-- --> <!-- --> announced plans to <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/yeo-hiap-seng-cuts-9-singapore-headcount-it-moves-canning-operations-malaysia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consolidate its canned-drink manufacturing<\/a> in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">While it is not new for home-grown firms to expand production beyond Singapore, the latest moves could signal a broader intensification in the regionalisation of the Republic\u2019s F&amp;B sector, say industry observers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But not all firms are equally positioned to make that leap. Larger manufacturers with significant scale and markets beyond Singapore\u2019s shores are more likely to do so than smaller players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\"><em>The Business Times<\/em> takes a closer look at why this trend seems to be intensifying, and the types of companies that might follow suit.<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"component-container\" class=\"container px-0 no-print\">\n<div data-testid=\"article-inside-btg-newsletter-component\" class=\"track-impression rounded-lg border border-gray-175 bg-white px-6 py-8 text-center shadow-[0px_4px_32px_0px_rgba(0,0,0,0.05)] no-print mb-6 lg:-mx-8\" data-section-name=\"newsletter\" data-section-label=\"decoding asia 1\">\n<h3 class=\"mb-2 font-lct text-7xl font-normal leading-snug -tracking-2%\">Navigate Asia in<br \/>a new global order<\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-lct text-lg font-normal leading-snug -tracking-2%\">Get the insights delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Picking up the pace?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">It is not unheard of for Singapore\u2019s home-grown F&amp;B firms to regionalise operations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Household names, such as Gardenia bread maker <!-- --> <!-- -->QAF<!-- --> <!-- --> and soft-drink manufacturer <!-- --> <!-- -->Fraser and Neave<!-- --> <!-- --> \u2013 which formed Tiger Beer as a <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/tiger-beers-100-year-history-singapore-birth-global-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint venture with Heineken<\/a> in 1932 \u2013 have long-established <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/fn-unit-leases-land-us39-million-build-dairy-manufacturing-facility-cambodia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">production bases outside Singapore<\/a>, drawn by lower land and labour costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Such moves also align with the Republic\u2019s broader economic strategy of shifting away from lower-value, labour-intensive manufacturing towards higher-value activities such as services, finance and advanced manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">However, post-pandemic disruptions to energy, logistics and commodity markets have deepened the push towards regionalisation, said Chong Le Jia, chief executive officer of small-batch food manufacturing facility Foodplant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cFirms are increasingly re\u2011evaluating production footprints as long\u2011term strategic choices, rather than short\u2011term cost adjustments, \u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">One such strategic priority is ensuring supply-chain resilience, with firms distributing production to mitigate geopolitical risks, freight disruptions and concentration exposure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Ben Charoenwong, an associate professor of finance at Insead, flagged technology as another driver behind regionalisation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Tech advancements such as automation and digital supply-chain coordination have made it \u201cfar easier today\u201d for a company to produce in Johor, Malaysia, even as it continues to manage, brand and innovate its products from Singapore, he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">\u201cTipping point\u201d for local firms<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Chong said that companies producing at scale are more likely to regionalise \u201cas their economics change materially once production exceeds domestic demand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">As local brands grow their customer bases beyond Singapore, proximity to the foreign markets they serve becomes a competitive lever, she explained. These companies may move production closer to foreign consumers to lower costs, improve responsiveness and support regional distribution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Conversely, some remain in Singapore as their competitiveness is anchored in capability, not cost, highlighting the trust premium associated with being made here, Chong added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThese factors matter for innovation-led companies, premium brands and those manufacturing for regulated markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Prof Charoenwong noted that companies with a smaller operating scale may find that cost differences between Singapore and elsewhere do not justify the disruption and complexity of relocation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">They may also stay when their competitive advantages are tied to Singapore-specific assets, including access to specialised talent and integration with government-linked supply chains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Ultimately, the \u201ctipping point\u201d for Singapore companies to move operations overseas is when competitors start producing at \u201cmeaningfully lower costs\u201d from nearby locations, said Prof Charoenwong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cBoth Yeo\u2019s and APBS cited the need to optimise capacity utilisation and strengthen manufacturing efficiency, which suggests they\u2019d reached a point where the cost gap became operationally significant.\u201d  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Branding and bottom line\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Concerns surround how regionalisation can <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/singapore\/tiger-beer-brewed-vietnam-still-singaporean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dilute firms\u2019 Singapore identity<\/a> \u2013 and by extension hurt their bottom line \u2013 but Sharon Ng, a marketing professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), thinks such fears may not materialise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cBrand identity is not about where operations sit, but about what a brand stands for, so moving abroad doesn\u2019t necessarily weaken or strengthen it,\u201d said Prof Ng, who is also deputy dean of the Nanyang Business School at NTU. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Rather, retaining a Singapore identity hinges on whether firms continue delivering consistent offerings and messages. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Even if relocating dilutes a firm\u2019s Singapore identity, whether that hurts sales is another question \u2013 one dependent on a company\u2019s value proposition, Prof Ng added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cIf people buy you because you are local, then (sales will be affected).
