Tan, a 46-year-old Singaporean, wakes up before 5 am to carry out breathwork exercises and red-light therapy to regulate his circadian rhythm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Chaignat, his 45-year-old Swiss partner, wakes up a little later, at around 6 am. They cycle together to a nearby gym, timing their session to catch the first light of the day. \u201cWe try to get morning sunlight as early as possible,\u201d says Tan, describing it as a natural cue for the body to wake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Afterwards, they return home for a slower ritual: walking barefoot in their garden to \u201cground\u201d themselves, a practice they say helps calm the body. But Tan, who works as a breathwork architect and lifestyle optimisation coach, says: \u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is simply finding the things that work for us and sticking to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Tools of the trade<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Interest in wellness trends \u2013 from ice baths to infrared saunas \u2013 has surged in Singapore. But Tan and Chaignat are among those taking it a step further, bringing these practices into their homes and offices, and turning their living spaces into extensions of gyms, spas and recovery studios.<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table mx-auto\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/1a5a647e687b88acce7601196c7fc8b023876ca76ccf21324029725d0d4b2176\" alt=\"\" height=\"793\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Tan and Chaignat believe red-light therapy can aid workout recovery and reduce inflammation, among other benefits. <span>PHOTO: TAY CHU YI, BT<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Some of these tools \u2013 such as light therapy for circadian regulation or oxygen therapy for specific medical uses \u2013 are backed by established research. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Others remain more experimental, with evidence still evolving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">These tools span a wide price range, from S$8 for mouth tape and S$350 for a red-light panel, to as much as S$100,000 for a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But for the health-conscious, price tags are secondary to their need for sharper focus, faster recovery and, ultimately, longevity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Just ask Harvey Chen. The 38-year-old fintech director owns two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, with one in his Singapore home office and the other in his Dubai office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table mx-auto\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/4e906b20d4acc1bf058d4957cbcbeea3b801b7e7c4c06552e86d64aeb60faec7\" alt=\"\" height=\"642\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Harvey Chen paid a six-figure sum for a hyperbaric oxygen chamber from O2genes, which he installed in his Singapore home office to keep him sharp between and during meetings. <span>PHOTO: O2GENES<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">After years as a client at wellness centre O2genes, he decided to purchase the chambers outright for a six-figure sum, treating them less as a luxury than as a tool for performance \u2013 even though they can be leased for about S$3,200 a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI have as many as 15 meetings a day,\u201d Chen explains. \u201cAfter lunch, those two to three hours are really not productive. But when I get into the chamber, I don\u2019t feel that after-lunch sleepiness; I can stay alert the whole day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The chamber has become a place of rest and focus. He takes calls from inside it, turning downtime into productive time. He even uses it when he has a hangover: \u201cI go into the chamber for an hour. When I walk out, I feel normal again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Chen is quick to temper expectations, though. Mornings begin with weight training and cardio, afternoons include 60 to 90 minutes in the chamber, and evenings often end with sauna and ice baths. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Underpinning it all is a tightly managed regimen of blood tests, supplements and, more recently, testosterone replacement therapy \u2013 which he credits with jump-starting his return to fitness after years of fatigue, unwanted weight and low motivation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">\u201cSelf-care saved my life\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Bong Siewcheong, an entrepreneur who runs the buzzy My Awesome Cafe in Telok Ayer, arrived at his health routine in much the same way: through a health crisis. In 2018, a bout of chronic depression forced him to step away from work entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cMy body just asked me to stop,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">What followed was not a dramatic overhaul, but a gradual rebuilding. He began introducing small, repeatable acts of self-care \u2013 morning meditation, cold plunges and more deliberate rest \u2013 which, over time, became essential to how he functions day to day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Now, his mornings begin before dawn with light meditation, followed by a cold plunge at three degrees Celsius. The first 90 seconds, he says, are \u201cvery primal\u2026 You get signals like you\u2019re dying.\u201d Then something changes. \u201cThe senses kick back in and say, \u2018You\u2019re not dead yet.\u2019 And when you emerge from the cold plunge, you feel ready for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/f55b7136d4760b61e892925a6e40399a119d3d4963e492f2a2332f1be0e1a28b\" alt=\"\" height=\"1520\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Bong Siewcheong plans to install a hyperbaric oxygen cocoon in his home and use it almost daily. <span> PHOTO: O2GENES<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Bong is planning to install a hyperbaric oxygen chamber from O2Genes in his bedroom, which he expects to use at least five times a week. \u201cAfter calculating the cost of regular visits outside, it just makes sense to have it at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But unlike some health-conscious folk, he does not track every variable or obsess over biomarkers. Instead, he relies on a simpler measure: how he feels. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cIf the metrics are showing positively, but I feel crap, it\u2019s irrelevant,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat matters more is how I feel today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">His days follow a steady rhythm: a midday workout, an early dinner and a strict no-screen rule after 8.30 pm. But sleep, he admits, has been a longstanding struggle. The goal is no longer perfect sleep, but consistent recovery \u2013 enough to feel steady again the next day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Don\u2019t ignore the basics<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">To be sure, some therapies still sit in a grey area, with varying levels of scientific backing. The interviewees are aware of this, but are willing to experiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Tan, for one, says he does not mind being \u201ca guinea pig\u201d for new interventions, testing them against his own biomarkers and refining his routine in consultation with his doctor. But for all the tools and devices now available, he is clear that the fundamentals still come first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWe\u2019ve moved from pharmaceuticals to supplements to biohacking,\u201d he says. \u201cBut we\u2019re still not addressing the root cause sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/44a0e186cbebd287e375b4f3e01afa5effa5fe7aad9107d75b72b21ffaf2244f\" alt=\"\" height=\"781\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Tan and Chaignat are willing to try different therapies to see what works best for them. <span>PHOTO: TAY CHU YI, BT<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">In his view, as much as 70 to 80 per cent of health comes down to basics: how one eats, moves, sleeps and manages stress. The rest \u2013 from red light to ice baths \u2013 are there to offer incremental gains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Chen agrees: \u201cThe most important thing is sleep. Then exercise.
