This is the latest instalment in our From the Vault feature series, in which we reflect on culturally significant movies celebrating notable anniversaries.<\/em><\/p>\n A London-set romcom about one woman\u2019s search for a \u201cnice, sensible man\u201d, it cleverly repackaged certain aspects of Britishness \u2013 chiefly stiff upper lips and self-deprecating humour \u2013 for a global audience.<\/p>\n Viewed today, its charms are still obvious, but its politics seem like they are from a different century altogether.<\/p>\n Based on the column, and later book, by Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary<\/em> was adapted by Fielding, Andrew Davies (television\u2019s Pride and Prejudice<\/em>) and Richard Curtis (Love Actually<\/em>) \u2013 the latter adding a familiar sprinkling of cinematic cosiness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nReleased 25 years ago this month, the 2001 film Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary<\/em> was a huge success, earning its star, Ren\u00e9e Zellweger, an Oscar nomination and spawning three sequels<\/span> that helped the franchise gross nearly US$900 million worldwide.<\/div>\n
